NES Tools

Hey there,

I'm trying to find the proper screw driver to remove the screws on the back of the NES cart. No hardware store I've been to seems to have a screw driver as fine as the one I need. Anyone know where I can get one? Do I need to order online?

You want a gamebit bit 3.8 mm. If you want to open gamecubes, n64's, snes's, get the 4.5 mm too. If you want to open virtual boys, you'll need a long 4.5 mm one (regular won't reach far enough with the driver). Ebay gamebit and you'll find them.

I think you're saying to open up the console. I mean the cartridge. I have 3.0 mm for the cart and it's slightly too large. Radio Shack said they don't have anything smaller than the 3.0mm.

3.8 mm opens the carts up, that or a flat head screw driver on some of them.  All you need is phillips head driver for the consoles.  SNES and several other systems us a 4.2mm bit.  You can snag a set of both sizes for like 10 bucks on ebay, well worth the money.

On all the carts I own, they are flat heads and the 3.0 mm flat screw driver is too large it seems.

All 5 screw games have the flat head ones, and "most" of the 3 screw carts have the security screws that you will need the 3.8mm security bit for.

I think your right Skipper.  All he needs to do is go to like Sears or Walmart and buy a set of small screwdrivers....I use a small craftsman one which had to have come from Sears.  Even those shitty 5 packs from the dollar store would do the trick.

You answered my question just fine, I'm just a little confused. You say I need a 3.8mm when I'm trying out the 3.0mm and it won't work. I don't know how a larger screwdriver will work. But maybe my set is mislabeled. But I know for sure Radio Shack does not have the right screw driver. I suppose I'll Home Depot a try, I don't have a Sears. Sorry, if I sound like I'm being difficult, I'm just frustrated is all. I appreciate the input you are all giving me.

I misunderstood completely. My apologies for confusing. There are two types of screws used on nes carts.

One type is a small philips screw that also fit a small flat screwdriver head. For these screws, you just need to find a small flathead screwdriver. I don't know the size you need for these. I think the screwdriver I use says craftsman on it (which came from Sears). Home Depot should have something too. Take a cart with you if you're afraid to guess or buy one of those $10 sets that has a million sizes.

The other type is a security screw that needs a special screw driver or bit to open. The security bit is commonly called a "gamebit" and the size is 3.8mm. Since you were having trouble getting your carts open, I assumed you needed this.

I think the best thing you could do is take a (BIC) ballpoint pen, heat it with a cigarette lighter, place it on the screw (press it) and let it cool down.
After that just (unr)screw like it's a screwdriver.
It's how I opened up a SNES and some Nes, Snes and GameGear cartridges.
