Test/Demo Carts found & dumped
07. Apr 2013 at 14:17

Heya N64 lovers  Cheesy

Recently some mysterious N64 protos carts & special carts were sold in Japan.  Smiley

Though I didn't buy them myself, I got the chance to get the roms of those  Cool

And here they are:

http://uptobox.com/fn5bp3gw2mv1

The 2 proto carts is called photoviewer and 64GB Checker V1.05.

One of the "normal" carts in grey were a kind of special tests which I was not able to use. The other one is just Killer Instinct European version.

The blacks carts is a kind of demo, with nice a music. Interestingly some of the assets (but not all!!) can be found in the N64 devkit (chrome demo for instance). Date are 1996!

Thanks Gilgamesh and an anonym contributor for such roms.

The U64 type logo is indicating it is a western product. That six looks kinda odd

Hello, first post here.

The "Unknown Test.n64" rom's screen header text says "Dolphin Controller Test". I suppose they were testing GAMECUBE prototye controllers using the N64.

The black carts say something I can't make out: "EEJINGU cassette". No matter how hard I try, I can't reverse EEJINGU into anything meaningful.

The EMI cart says "FURASSHU cassette"... which seems to mean "Flash", as the big GB64 cart also says FURASSHU in the blue label, and these are known to be flash based.

Interestingly, the big GB64 cart says "KAATORIJJI" (cartridge) instead of "KASETTO" (cassette) like the smaller ones.

I can only do basic kana/syllabics reading, so all the kanji/logograms are out of my reach Tongue. Hope it was helpful, though probably most of you already knew, but since none posted, I did.

OH, and thanks for the roms!

EDIT: could the u64 demo have anything to do with the touted Unreal N64 port?
EDIT2: The U64 rom's header says AGING ROM in the title area... I guess that matches the mysterious "EEJINGU", making it japanese, so most probably unrelated to Unreal or anything from the west, both because of the language and that 1996 date on the label...

U64 is short for Ultra 64, what the N64 was supposed to be called...

well, yeah, I know about Ultra 64, since I coincidentally started buying magazines about that time. The thing is that the "font" used for that model in the ROM reminded me of Unreal's logo, specially since Ultra 64 would more properly suggest a capital U, but the that u64 logo model uses minuscule, like Unreal's logo.
But nevermind that, the other factors overrule this anyway Tongue, and also, upon actually searching for Unreal's logo, it's quite embelished, while the "u" here, while of the same type, it's rather standard.

They probably meant to call it, the whole project "Dolphin" from the very start, ( since the controllers are shaped like Dolphins, if you haven't noticed ).

Maybe it is a nickname for the type of people who are Nintendo fans. Since Japan, is the only place on Earth that has a dolphin hunting season.

Nintendo fans  = dolphin.

I just bet, it is some sorta, Japanese slang for consumers.
Beat the rods enough against the boat, to make them come out of the water, and be confused. Just like how gamers are.

It is obvious from those carts and the shape of the N64 controller, the whole Nintendo 3d project -SONY was undoubtfully Dolphin.

Then their is the rumor that Nintendo brought the R2 and refashioned it into the GCN as well as some arcade units.
