Title: Genuine Question
Post by kungfukid on 17. Aug 2006 at 23:12
Ok, I have to ask this. What the hell do some of you guys do that you can afford to spend such huge amounts on such a regular basis on NES stuff? Some of the prices stuff goes for on so many games, accessories and rare items is not exactly cheap, and yet some of you guys just spend it! I'd love to spend as much, but I simply couldn't afford to!

LOL! Makes sense I suppose, but I work hard, and still couldn't possibly afford to spend the kind of money some of the guys do.

when I was unemployed I used my savings account and raked up about 2k worth of CC debt.  Now I have a job working for a company that is sub-contracted out to sort mail for the USPS.  Now I am nearly out of debt, buying some sweet stuff, and saving for a house :D :D :D :D

Hmm, yeah, if I didn't have a mortgage and insurance and stuff, I guess I could prob afford to buy a lot more thinking about it!

This hobby is cheap compared to some others !!! My other hobby is modding / racing my mustang, now that gets real expensive ! I have $17000 invested so far and I am just begining. Some of my friends are well over $100,000 and they are not "rich" by any means. If its something you enjoy you just have to budget and work for it.

I love collecting NES games but I also have to spend money on my car (trying to save for a new one. Plus playing around with the ladies adds up too.

I stopped buying a lot of stuff recently because I didn't have a job.  I just got a job now, so I'll be buying more stuff.  I also tend to purchase items in lots and resell the duplicates, to help fund my collection.

RE: The modding mustangs. I'm sorry, but you can't possibly afford to invest over $100K in a car unless you are extremely well off! lol! Unless you have several loans to cover it! NOBODY has a spare £100K lying around unless they are 'rich' as such to spend in one go. Even if that investment was over a five year period, it's still nearly $2000 a month EVERY month that whole time! You could only 'budget' that amount of money as spare if you're earning a minimum of $5000 a month ($60k a year), that's well off in my book! lol. And if that aint well off in your book - well you must have even more than that!!! Any jobs going? I fancy a move to the states!  :D

Yeah, I haven't spent any more than £15 on any one game yet (around $25), and I don't intend to until I've exhausted all the games I can get in that price range! Then I dunno what I'll do, save up for the more expensive one I guess!

Lol, I know, that's what I tend to tell new collectors when they start out! It's all to easyto get the 'got to get it all now' bug!  :)

I only have about 300+ games and so far I haven't spent more than $9 for a game. I sure would hate to pay about $100 for a BBP2 but I might be forced too, unless I can find one in the wild.......hopefully.

I'm ok for now, since I still only have around 65 games, but that isn't too bad for the short time I've been collecting for the NES. Also, around two thirds of them are boxed and complete so I think I've done not too bad so far. My only aim at this stage is to get to the 100 game mark by the end of the year, then I'll reassess my aims and decide how much I want to spend from that point on.

Thats what you would think but ... lol.  If you figure he started out with a $12000 Mustang. Modded it into a prize winning show car. ($10000) Did all work himself including polishing. Had it appraised around $30000. Then unfortunatley crashed it. SO this means insurance money, which he spent on a new Mustang. approx ($35000). Now he works full time making good money but not anything crazy. Now instead of buying a house and having a mortgage he has put alot of cash into this car. It wins almost every show it attends. Is he rich ? Not really. Is investing in a car a good idea ?? Who knows ?  But its his hobby and he enjoys it. Same thing with these NES games. If you enjoy it enough you spend the money.  Oh and my car is still a turd compared to most the cars out there racing but I only do it for fun.

I work my butt off to buy video games. Plus I still live at home so that helps lower my actual bill cost :) I rarely go in debt for a game but I think I did once or twice.

i'm not really a collector..but i do enjoy playing my old games.  i make alot of extra income while im in college selling NES/SNES/N64 games/accessories on ebay that i find at thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, pawn shops, etc.  most of my money goes to my dj hobby :(  if you want to see a hobby that truly sucks all your money away, pick that one :P
