Title: PAL region codes
Post by Speedy_NES on 21. Aug 2006 at 23:38
I've been wondering which region codes were used in which countries.  It would be nice to get a confirmed list of countries for each region code.  This info would be especially useful for website databases that use flags for the different regions.

Here is a list of what I have at the moment:

AUS = Australian

ITA = Italy
UKV = United Kingdom
GBR = Great Britain
Were all of the above codes also released in Australia?  What about games with AUS code in other PAL-A countries?

EEC = Germany and Scandinavia? Anywhere else?
ESP = Spain
FRA = France/Belgium/The Netherlands, possibly Luxemburg?
FRA/FRA = France...Belgium?
FRG = Austria & Switzerland?  What about Germany?
FRG/FRG = Austria/Switzerland?
GPS = Scandinavia/France/Portugal?
HOL = The Netherlands
NOE = Germany
NOE/FRG = Germany
SCN = Scandinavia
SWE/SWE = Sweden

ASI =
HKG = Hong Kong
KOR = North Korea?

Yeah, I know, but for which Asian country(ies) was it used?  I do know what they all stand for, but I'm looking to make a definitve list of countries in which these region codes were released in.  ;)

I would assume Japan, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong for sure.  But they could have been distributed in TONS of those smaller coutries, and there is no way in the world to ever know for sure.

EEC was also used in France. Got Fester's Quest with EEC on the front and FAH on the back. It might have the original from Holland too (FAH = France and Holland), but it was bought in France atleast :)

I have bought earlier NES games from the black series from Germany with FRG on the back, but not front. Some say that FRG stands for Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), but that dont make sense to me. The Berlin wall fell in 1989, but games like Snow Brothers, Solomon's Key 2 and many others have FRG code on the front. These games were released years after the wall fell, so why use West Germany as code when it doesnt excist? FRG games are from Austria atleast.

I can also mention that the ESP code was also used in Scandinavia for later releases like Hammerin Harry, Robocop 3, Captain Skyhawk etc etc. Bergsala imported the games from Spain, possibly to save money. I have also found Robocop 3 ESP code in France 2 times, so i guess they imported some stuff too.

I bought a NES lot from a guy in Australia. 3-4 of these games had ITA code on them. Its possible that Australia used the same code as Italy on some games. Also possible that this guy was in vacation in Italy and bought some games or imported them to tho.

are you sure that Bergsala imported all those ESP releases? I would've tought some other company made a buck from that import...

Yep,  Bergsala imported those :) Afaik the only licensed game that wasnt released by Bergsala is Joe & Mac Caveman Ninja. It was imported by Wendros AB. Nintendo.se lists all the spanish releases, but not Joe & Mac. My other SCN lists also shows Bergsala as publisher on the spanish releases.

FRA = France and Benelux.

HOL is only used when a game was released in France with French screen text. The French version would get the FRA/FRA (or only FRA) tag, and in Holland an English version was released with the HOL code. Examples are Swords and Serpents, Duck Tales 2, Kirby's Adventure and Shadowgate.

You won't find FAH on NES carts, only on manuals or boxes.

Pretty sure that the FAH code is also on the back label of some of the carts.

FAH on the back is only used on the older games. They changed it later to FAH-1, which also have english caution warning on the back, not just french and dutch like FAH got. I also have a Donkey Kong with FRA code on the front and HOL code on the back.
