Title: Only a grey picture Post by Bred on 29. Aug 2006 at 22:21
Hi there.
I'm pretty new to the NES using, so here comes a real newbie question! When I start my NES the picture only turns grey. It doesn't matter what game I put in. I don't even see a response when I insert a game. What should I do? On the other unit I have theres a problem too. It only blinks. At the same moment I press the power button it just blinks. On, Off, On off and so on. I read some of the topics here about connector cleaning and changing. But, does that refer to my NES to since I can't even start it without a game? Well, hoing for some good answers. Martin |

Well, sorry for the trouble with the first NES. It wasn't modified, so I couldn't play those games I tried.
But, the secon NES still bothers me. I read that article, but he seemed to have trouble starting a game, or that was at least how I understood it. But, I can of course open it and clean everything and then try again. Well, tomorrow perhaps. |

The reason (most likely) why you cant start your games is because the connector inside the NES that reads the game is either dirty or worn out. You can try to clean all your games with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and see if that helps. If it doesnt just buy a brand new 72 pin connector on Ebay. You can find 1 for ~$10 shipped so its not really expencive.

Although I must state that I've never once seen a deck that needed more than a simple cleaning. Invest in a cleaning kit, it's worth it in the long run :)

My solution to cleaning connectors is to use rubbing alcohol and a small, chisel-point foam brush like you can buy from wal-mart for applying paints and stains. The handle makes it a little easier to work with than a q-tip, and from my experience, the very tip of the brush gets in the contacts pretty well.
Just another idea. |

I open all my games and take out the PCB board when i clean them. This way i get much better contact with the game and the q-tip. After cleaning alot of games my finger hurts tho hehe, from pressing the q-tips so a brush would probly be better if you clean alot of games at the same time :)

Ok, I'll try cleaning or changing the connector.. Talked with another friend of mine and he said the same.
Thanks! |
