Title: Wii prices on NES classics (and others)
Post by jajaja on 14. Sep 2006 at 09:04
Seems that the final price is set for the classic games you can get through Wii. The price is between $5 - $10 depending on what title it is. This is good news for me :) I sell some some systems and games now and then and was afraid that downloading classics would be free. But now that the price pretty high imo i dont think it will affect my sales, nor prices on classic games at all.

Some hacker will hopefully find a way to get them into the Wii for free. I doubt that this is a problem due to its Wifi connectivity. I hate it to pay for the same game over 15 years again and again.

$5-$10? When I can legally get new music tracks for $0.99 they expect me to pay $5 for Dr Jeckyll? Jajaja, this will, if true, prolly drive up the price of consoles themselves $10-$20 through the christmas season (maybe even on par with SNES) and we'll be seeing a lot more inflated lots and commons closing. Fortunately this takes the focus off of more hard to find or lesser-known NES stuff. Definitely will create a seller's market. Imagine your $2 Tetris' are magically worth $5 just because people don't know how to emulate, don't own the Wii yet, but are champing at the bit from the Hype.

Thats what i read atleast. They will release 60 games to start with (30 for Nintendo systems and 30 for TG-16 and Mega Drive/Genesis). It also says that atleast 10 more games will be released every month. I dont think they will flood the system with all the bad games, probly only the most popular.

I dont think it will be hackable to download for free. You have to pay for them with creditcard or something called Wii points. You can buy alot of things online with a CC today, but i never heard of anyone who manage to hack this system. But we'll see.

hopefully, they'll have a pre-paid card you can buy or something. hence, the "Wii Points" I guess.

Holy crap, that's expensive ROMs.  I was thinking somewhere closer to the $2-3 price range.

They've sold a ton of the classics on GBA in the $10-$20 range, why not $5?  They'll sell it for what they'll sell for...

It makes me grumpy that we'll have to pay extra for the web browser...

The only way I can think of right now to "hack" it would be to figure out what protocols Nintendo is using, set up a DNS server on your LAN, and have your own computer respond to queries the console sends to Nintendo's servers.  You then have a copy of whatever program Nintendo uses (or one that works like it) and access the ROMs that way.  It would also have to pretend to accept the payment card or whatever they are doing.  Not sure how possible it is.

Or maybe it's just a horribly designed system and it will be really easy.

The games will be encrypted.  It doesn't matter what kind of fake server you produce, breaking the encryption will be the only way to play your own games.  I think after seeing the DS encrpytion broken in like 2 years (different than being able to play homebrew) that they'll have a pretty good system in place.  The NES games are even small enough to encrypt the whole thing rather than just a header as they did with the DS. I bet it will be at least a couple years before we see it broken.  Even then, it will be a sony psp style patch vs hack...

We have a different relationship to CC here in Germany and it's not easy to get one. I doubt that the "normal" customers of Nintendo can pay their games via CC.

Encrypted games are nice, but all you need is a server proggy and the encrypted game .... and the game can be intercepted during transmission ( just like they did it with the store wifi demos for DS in Japan ).

don't get me wrong, I'm not a criminal  :-X
