How about we get a chain started where one person states what they consider the hardest game they've played?  Most likely, it will be a game they haven't beaten.

If someone has beaten that game before they can post how they've beaten it, then state their hardest game.

Basically, this will keep going on until someone finds a game no one has ever beaten.

Oh yeah, & let's stick to licensed games - Tengen included.

At the moment it would be Castle of Dragon, have tried quite some but just can't beat it.
Maybe try again soon, i have almost everything sorted out in my gameroom.

I actually beat Castle of Dragon today.  Tough as hell, only cause it's tough to control.  How I beat it:

Get close to the dragon and take a little damage from the fireballs.  The hardest part is avoiding it's tail.  Then you need to time your jumps to hit the dragon's head.  If you time it right, you can get 2 hits in a jump, but I got one most of the time.  Took me like 20 hits to kill him.  Hope this helps!


Try beating Deadly Towers.  I don't think it's possible.

I'll try that, thanks for the tip. I also have a hard time beating Battle Toads again, i beat it a while back but couldn't resist playing it again yesterday, i sucked at it though.

Ha! I beat that.  After getting to the end levels, I figured out about the warps & it made it easier.  I beat it again to show my brother.

What about Slalom? I could never beat that.

Holy Diver for FC and Ghost N' Goblins (both games are very simular) are 2 games that i've probly never going to be able to beat. Maybe after weeks of intence playing hehe.

Speaking of hard games, i just decided to play Call of Duty 2 for PC again. I played it when it was new, but there was one point in the game where i got stuck because so damn hard. I tried like 200 times, but game up. Times like this you regret playing on the hardest difficulty hehe. Months later, today, i tried again and after 30-50 tries i finaly made it! :D

Yeah that's what I mean.  Kill them and they reappear.  The long hallway in Level 5 (i think) is nearly impossible because of this.  

Long hallway in Level 5, hmm... this is the Base stage, right?  With the helicopters dropping footsoldiers.

Ghost and Goblins, never beat that game. I'm not sure if I made  it much farther than the second level.

The stage select in Ghosts 'N Goblins is mandatory; unless you want to go through hell twice. :o

My philosophy is this: if it can be done within the game, it's fair game.

Battletoads and G'N'G are both beatable with a little repetitious practice, they shouldn't be considered when there are so many games out there that are much more difficult.  The only difference is that the two above are actually fun whereas most really tough games lick.

I've never heard of anyone beating Overlord legitimately so, until I do, that is my nomination.

I can't even figure out how to play Overlord, but I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.  I don't think it'll be that bad once I figure out what to do.

I beat this game today actually, on real NES without any cheats. I didnt even use a contunie and i still had all turtles alive when i was done :) The game can be frustrating sometimes, but i dont find it that hard. I had to try 4-5 times during the last couple of days before i made it all the way through. Getting the boomerang and scroll/beam weapon will help you alot on the the 2 last missions, Technodrome and inside the Technodrome. The lazerguys in the narrow hallway at the end is incredible hard without the scroll weapon. If u get hit you will fall back and you're unlucky another lazerguy will respawn. Suddently the hallways are crawling with them hehe.

man i have to beat battletoads if its the last thing i ever do lol. i got the game brand new when it came out and i was like 7 or 8 years old. and to this day have only ever got past the (jet ski) level once lol. i just cant do it. its so freakin hard. espcially with 2 people. but i think it can be done. ive just never had the nerve to sit and try it for more than an hou or so. plus i always thought the lolo games were kinda tough. never beat any of those. but the thing is with a lot of games for the NES they can be beat if you play em endlessly but i get bored playing games like lolo for more than an hour or so. so its hard to tell which games are the hardest or which games we just got tired of playing and never beat lol?

Double Dragon 3 its way to hard

Double Dragon 3 is problematic because of the controls.  They're unresponsive. >:( Don't you hate it when you jump to do the spin kick, but it doesn't work? Especially with people surrounding you.

Anyway, yeah, I beat that, too. If you're playing 1 player there is this trick: select 2-players have the second player die blinking, but before he disappears, talk to Brett.  Now try to keep your partner alive. Defeat all the enemies, then have your partner exit first followed by you.  Now you should be alone, but able to select both players. ;D

Yep ;) I never found DD3 that hard actually. The only place in the game that really sux is in Egypt when you have to do alot of jumping. If you dont make the jump you will lose your player. The last boss (not the mummies) can also be alittle frustrating. Other than that is fairy easy imo.

I re nominate battletoads.  I still have never beaten that game (even cheating with the genie)

Funny you should say that; I just beat it - first without warps, then 8 times through + the extra worlds.  "Too hard" - ha! :) Frustrating? Yes, >:( & I didn't even have a save option. :P

I've beat all these without cheats.  There's only one that deserves the spot, Gumshoe.  It's unbeatable.

What do you mean? I know what you're talking about - that monster on the last stage that you can't shoot with the lightgun, but instead you shoot yourself to jump while automatically firing a machine gun.  I beat that part.  I remember Zulie shooting stuff that you needed to dodge, but I don't remember if you could shoot those as well.

Ikari Warriors 1! Seriously, this game is IMPOSSIBLE to beat without the ABBA code. I was just playing it, trying to beat it, but a crappity smacking respawn bug happend so i respawned within 3 walls so i couldnt get further and this happend after over 1 hour of playing!

Damn the game is so bad, you move slower than a snail in the ocean and the levels are longer than John Holmes's dick. Weapons are inaccurate and when you get a power-up or a tank you die like 5 seconds later or are stopped by water or quicksand. I seriously wanted to crush this game with a sledgehammer after i played it!  >:( >:(

How did you beat it then?  I sat there and must have hit that thing in the head literally at least 346 times.  Eventually I gave up because it didn't seem to die and I never tried after that.

I already told you; you shoot yourself to jump & the ammo coming out of the machine gun will hit Zulie.  Keep doing that.

I just got a complete copy of Gumshoe and flipped through the manual.  It says that Zulie can be defeated by shooting repeatedly at the eye.  I can not confirm this of course, simply based on the fact that the game is IMPOSSIBLY hard, never made it far enough to try.

i vote for The Last Ninja.  some of the jumps and puzzles are insanely hard.  i beat the game, but only because i used the save state on an emulator and had a walkthrough.

Thanks man, but that doesn't help either unfortunately.  When I first fought it, I shot at it and shot at it to no avail.  Then, I read the manual too and saw you had to shoot the beast in the eye, and did this.  I hit it so many times the only possibility is that you have to hit it REPEATEDLY in the eye a number of times without missing, if you do I would assume this sets off the number back to zero and you have to do it all over again.

Last Ninja pissed me off because I got to the last level without the shurikens; &, to my belief, you need those to beat the final boss.

Edit: I tried Gumshoe again - it took about 25 shots to take down Zulie.  When Zulie's health is about halfway down, he'll flash.

Okay, well, Superman wasn't so tough after all.  Thanks for the vid adaml, it gave me the will to keep fighting, since it pretty much showed that you have to pretty much do what I was doing anyway, but not try and get so far ahead of him...pretty simple really.  So yeah, re-nominating Conan now :P

I don't even think they work and you don't need them to play 3D was just a selling point in the title.  Great game.

Yeah, they suck as far as I remember, I'd have to pull them out to try but that whole red/blue screen thing was nothing compared to Sega's bit.

Maybe it's just me, because I wasn't expecting so many levels. I guess it isn't the levels, but the repetiveness of the game.

I had to use the cheat to continue this game. I mean, 3 lives?! :o Stan, how did you beat this? I think Battletoads was a cakewalk compared to this. But I still leave Slalom up there because you can't continue.
