Title: Review: RetroZone's NES RetroPort
Post by ACiD on 07. Dec 2006 at 02:39
Where to Buy: www.retrousb.com

Price: $22.00 USD

The NES RetroPort is the latest addition to RetroZone's lineup. Fans of the 8-bit era can purchase this little beauty and be playing classic games the way they were  meant to be played in no time

Lets get down to the review.

Upon opening the package, I could tell right away that this isn't some cheap made-in-China converter. Time was actually spent making these.

No flimsy / thin plastic is used here. Hooking up the controller and having it be recognized by Windows XP is as painless as it gets.

when you plug the USB port in, Windows automatically detects and sets up the controller in Control Panel's "Game Controller".

The one and only emulator I use for NES is NNNesterJ. Configuring it in the emulator is just as you would with any Gamepad. (Nice and easy)

So are you tired of saying to yourself that its the keyboard making you play terrible? Or perhaps, the cumbersome PC Game Pads are not the same as the real deal?

If you feel this way, I highly recommend you put this ontop of your holiday shopping list. You won't be disappointed!

I have yet to find any flaw with this little gem.

Out of a rating system between 1 to 5, I would rate this product as a 5.

sadly no. the only things that i think works with it are standard controllers such as the original nes controller, nes dogbone controller and max. maybe its possible to get the nes advantage working.

Also, if it possible in anyway to get this posted on the Frontpage of nesworld.com , that'd be great. I want people to know this new advancement with nes controllers exists.

I saw Dain's review at NintendoAge and want one myself.  I have it on my Christmas list.  I'll buy it myself if I don't get it for the Holidays.

I picked one of these up a few days ago, and man it is great.  I have being using it all ton lately for taking screenshots.  I really suggest picking one of these babies up.  To bad I had to pay $30 bucks for mine and Dain got one for free :'(

I couldn't find Dain's review on NintendoAge.  NGD, or anyone else who has this, does this work just like a standard two-button (or four-button) gamepad?  Which buttons are 1 & 2?

It is just like a regular NES controller.  The retroport is just an adapter.  It plus into your USB port and then you plug a real unmodified controller into the retroport.  Everything plays exactly the same.  You just have to configure it to the emualtor in the input section which takes about 2 seconds.  Worth every penny I promise.  I use mine all the time to test out ideas I hear on forums or to play unreleased games.

Cool, but again, which button corresponds to which number?  PC gamepads are usually numbered. :-/

I am not sure I know exactly what you mean :-?

I use FCE Ultra and it allows you to setup the controller in pretty much any format you like.  You have to setup each button individually by pressing that button on the actually controller.  You can even set it up so that 1 controller controls both player 1 and 2.  Makes for an interesting 2 player.  If that doesn't answer your question go into a bit more detail of what you want to know cause I am not 100% sure on it.

When you open up FCE Ultra, then go to the joystick configuration, then press 'A' on the gamepad, what number comes up in the box under the corresponding button? What number comes up for 'B' , 'START' , 'SELECT' ?
