Title: Lots of questions about making Homebrew Labels
Post by albailey on 20. Feb 2007 at 16:14
It seems to me a person can spend a lot more time trying to get their label to look good than to actually do all the de-soldering, etc...

So how do you guys do your labels...

What dimensions and resolution image do you print?
Do you prefer to make your own image, or use someone elses?
If you make your own, do you tend to make it much larger and then convert it afterwards to the right size, etc..
What application do you print from? (Illustrator, or do you just import it into MS Paint)
What type of printer paper are you using? (or for that matter what type of printer or ink)

I have my dimensions at 5.5W, 9.7H. It looks about right.

It's too bad Kinkos won't print them. :-/

What paper do you print them on?   If I try using Photo paper, its too stiff.  If I use regular paper, the output is lousy (might just be the printer).

...

I forgot to mention it's in CM. Anyways, today I just got my labels printed at school! There's this place by the Photoshop classes that does high quality prints on glossy paper, & it only cost 1.50 for a few sheets! :)

I wonder if the guy gave me a deal. :o He was impressed with the labels.

Thanks, I'll look into "HP Brochure and Flyer Paper".  Apparently its thin so it can be bent.

i just print them on regular old printer paper (at work on a color laser printer) and then put a piece of packaging tape over it to waterproof it and make it glossy.  works pretty good.  but regular packing tape wont work, you have to use the 3" tape from staples (only place i could find it, and in bulk):

I went to Staples, & the widest tape they had was 48mm. :-?

I had to get mine online.  By the way, is yours non-acidic acrylic? I don't know if mine is. :-/

Let's just pray it doesn't yellow up the paper in the long run. :o

Here's a bit of a follow up for how I made my Sudoku labels.

I got the labels printed at Staples (they have a really nice color laser printer)
I printed them on glossy paper (the thin brochure paper).
The images were 300dpi and I ended up converting to PDF format, and had staples print them with no scaling.

To turn them into stickers, I used this :
http://www.stickermaker.com/xyron900new.html
This adds a laminate on the top and an adhesive backing on the bottom.

As long as your paper is thin, the sticker maker works fine.  If you use thick photo paper, the top of the label lifts up.  The downside is that the pages coming out of the sticker maker aren perfectly square, so cutting the individual stickers out of the paper takes effort.

I go to this place called Digi Dog Photo where they print on nice, glossy paper (the ones at the school didn't seem to be dark enough).

I then cut the paper carefully using a small paper cutter.

I then use packing tape to seal the label & glue it on the cartridge using permanent photo glue.

What does a label have to do with an NES game? I'm dead serious about this question.
