I would think anything you need would be over at NESdev.com.  You could also look at this site http://bobrost.com/nes/index.php  That guy taught a class on how to make homebrews.  His tools and resources are on the site still, so it might be a place to get you started.  Hope it helps.

Hacking would be fastest, but it would be cool if you programmed it yourself.

Not only that but then you could actually sell it. With a little time and good use of all the resources available you should have no problem coming up with a small, fun engine. Assembly isn't that bad if you have programming and data structure background, and it's not plagiarism if you look at decompiled code and use it as a tutorial basis for programming your own original material.

The difficult part is coming up with a full game's worth of graphics, music and then there's designing and populating the levels, working out bugs. It's more than just a program it's a package. That's where nesdev comes in, there's many talented graphics guys and skilled music composers that would love to get their work and credit in an original game...but a little financial consideration woudln't hurt I think and being able to sell a new NES game for a reasonable price helps cover that, make a charitable donation to the sources that helped you along the way and cover the costs of your equipment/supplies or the person to whom you entrust burning your games for release.

Of course you could release it as rom-only, there's always people that - if your game is worthwhile - will make a label with your permission and repro it. But the people you have helping you should know from the start that it's destined to be freeware, I'm sure many of them will be fully willing to work for credit alone but it's good to get that on the table up-front.

BTW on a related note, my Power Pad should be coming in a couple of days, and that should give me the motivation to begin work on my game again :)

Hmmm..interesting. How exactly would you go about creating your own NES game/cart??

Right on man, that's the same thought I had many years ago.  I gathered all the docs I could find (making what became the http://nesdev.com/ site) and learned how to program by experimenting with help.  Grab a book on 6502 Assembly if you can find one (they'll all be from 70's-80's), it'll help a lot.

It does take a lot of work (I have many unfinished projects), but anyone can do it.

I have been thinking bout this for a while also. I have been gathering some info but it's quite alot. I need more time to ever get this starting, thanks Memblers for the links.
Any chance we get to see another Garage cart? i still want to buy the first one you made, have any left?

He doesn't Hakan, I already asked him about a year ago about.  He told me he was thinking about re-releasing it though.  I am curious how the Garage Cart #2 is coming along though, I have had my eyes set one one of those babies for a long time.

:) thanks for the response guys.

Yesterday we spent the hole day gatering information, and it scared the hell out of us.

Its a lot harder than we expected an the 2 year plan is not far off,2 YEARS

but the plans are good

we scraped the porn idea

we wanted to keep it simple,so that we keep going on,kind of like the collecting idea,if you start with rodland and mr gimmick, you will be pissed pretty soon,so start symple, with smb and zelda

THIS IS THE PLAN!

the game will be called the fifth (5) star

its a space shooter like parodius and gradius(love those games)

the story is not clear, but something with destroying a star in 5 pieces

the game itself will be kept simple 1 screen you will keep moving up  ;)
smart he,if that works we will try to make it harder for us

the  biggest problem until now is getting the info of the computer(rom ) in to the cartridge

BUT WAIT not a simple  cartridge a gold 1 like the zelda games,BECAUSE a star shine's

a star has 5 points(punten) so there will be only 5 copies made of the game these wil be spread as follow

- 1 copie for the creator (me)
- 1 copie will be sold on ebay
- 1 copie will be sold at a fleamarket ,by me to a nes collecter without telling him,her ;) hehe sneaky, for 1euro or so
- 2 copies left got to do something orginel :-/ whel it will come to me

AND i now this is crazy but in the game, the fifth star will be destroid in 5 pieces, the 5 golden cartridges

SO hang on!

THIS IS CRAZY

... and the hardest part

5 jears after the release of the game the 5 fift star is destroyed in 5 pieces,so after 5 year i want all of the 5 golden cartridges DESTROYED!!

But how i don't now, don't think people will ,but will put it on the cart.

there are only 5 carts but don't want them to become rarety in some closet,so hope the will change many hands with in 5years

BUT first make the game, the story i came up with is great do :D

can i trade mark it ;)  TM

don't steal my idea our i will >:( huh hahaha ;D

if anybody wants to help there welcome and will be rewarded with eternal fame in the credits

my first thought is that if you work on something for two years you are going to want more than four other people to enjoy it .  also, if you have other people helping you I would assume they would want a copy as well.  and of course I want one  ;D

May I suggest a "stellar edition" released as you described in the special casings, and then a wide release in traditional grey for "investors."

Garage Cart #2 is coming out sometime.. I haven't given up.  Garage Cart #1 re-release is coming too, eventually.  It's all really late!

Dutch NES gamer, whenever you and your friends get your game finished I can help out with putting it on cartridges.  I can supply parts and some devkit support or just build them here and be your distributor.

Memblers and the guys at Nesdev are really helpful.

I lurked there for over 2 years without actually doing anything though.

I also found it helpful to program my own utility tools in a high level language, which helped me to learn more in depth info about the low level stuff I was trying to accomplish (my own CHR editor for example).

Back in November is when I first got an actual title screen to show up.  then I took a break.
In January I created another screen,  learned how scrolling works, learned how input works, etc..
In February I added the game dynamics, state machine etc..
So now it's March and I have a semi-playable game done.

I'm aiming for April to have mine completed.

If you have questions about how to get setup and going, nesdev is the place.  I'd offer my help, but I'm a newbie to the dev scene and my game istn that complicated.
