Title: SCN Street Gangs released in cardboard box? Post by natedogg on 17. Apr 2007 at 21:33
I'll try my luck here and hope that there is someone who knows for sure...
To this day, i have thought that Street Gangs was released for Rental Only in Scandinavia. But, i came across a guy today, who said that it was also released in a normal cardboard box too...is he lying / remembering wrong / trying to b*llshit me, or is he right? Needless to say, i have _never_ seen one for sale in a cardboard box, or seen it's release info anywhere / on any list that i have, so i have my doubts on this one... |

Bergsala never released this game, however the distributor of rental games, Yapon AB, might have had a few copies for sale in stores. This happened with Stealth ATF which was at first released as a rental-only. Later on Yapon sold it in a regular NES-cardboard box. They both have SCN-codes on the carts, I'm unsure of Stealth ATF's box-code, but I think I've seen it SCN.
Or there is another possibility. I have swedish manuals for two other Infogrames-games, Smurfs and Astérix, both never offically released in Sweden (Scandinavia). Street Gangs is also Infogrames. Maybe they had some undergound distribution going on. Smurfs and Asterix came with other PAL-B boxes though, so there were never any SCN-code on these. EDIT: This is a copy of Street Gangs sold in Sweden, the red tape was used by Stor & Liten, toy-store. No way to make out from the pic what code the game has though. EDIT2: I checked and the Stealth ATF box has SCN-code. Also it seems Yapon AB was the actual reason Street Gangs hit stores. They released a couple of other games, previously rental-only, for sale as well. Joe & Mac and Double Dragon II among these. |

Thanks for the very helpful info!
Interesting...i didn't know that Yapon also sold games. I have a list that says that Joe & Mac was imported by Wendros AB, but i guess that's wrong then. ( unless they imported it too, that is? ) But, thanks again, i'm very grateful for your help. :) |

I highly doubt that Yapon sold any games, but while Street Gangs might have been rental only in Sweden, it sure wasn't in Denmark....
I've always believed that the rental only advertisements were a scam. Not every Nintendo game was distributed by Bergsala, they were just the official distributor, but companies were allowed to use other distributors if they wanted to, like Elite (Joe & Mac + Dr. Franken etc) used a danish company called K.E. Matiasen, who later bought Bergsala's at the time Danish distributor, Electronic Fun, and became the Danish distributor of just about every Nintendo game until Bergsala opened their own office in Denmark. I believe Infogrames might've used K.E. to distribute their games aswell... games not carrying the "SCN" area code. The Street Gangs game available in Denmark has the FRG code. |

Hmmm... There are imports from Spain, ESP-coded games, that came with photocopied A4-instructions with Yapons name on them. Very much like the ESP-games imported by Bergsala (Hammerin' Harry, Capt. Skyhawk, Panic Restaurant etc). This led me to believe that Yapon had a few games up for sale.
I remember a discussion from a while back at the nesdb.se forum, where a guy claimed he had a copy of Street Gangs, with SCN-code, and bought in Copenhagen. Dunno if it was true.. What kind of instructions does the danish Street Gangs with FRG-code have? |

A fellow collector pointed me out that at NesDB, ( i did take a look at teh box there, before i even started this thread, but missed the part about the manual, being the blind pig i am... ) on the back of the box it says:
"Instructions in Finnish and Danish, Swedish" http://www.nesdb.se/game_info/scans/box/b/387_b.jpg So, i guess it has to be SCN...or did they put an SCN manual in there and use the FRG box, ( more than highly doubt that, since that text above is sitting on the box / FRG:s never came with Finnish manuals ;) ) or something crazy like that...this is getting interesting. :) |

But it doesn't say "imported by Bergsala" and according to their release list they never distributed the game.

I'm aware of the fact that it was not a Bergsala release.
They must have used some other firm or maybe even distributed it on their own...like Acclaim distributed / marketed SCN Double Dragon 2. |
