Is it possible to make one of these things with, like hundreds of songs? Like 256 or something? ;D
Not trying to bring down the Vegavox or anything. |

Yes, a full cart could be made with 256 songs on it.
But a full cart could be also be made with only 1 song on it. there are a lot of factors affecting how much data a song takes. I can only relate my own simplistic case (the music for sudoku which I still havent finished) I plan on using only 1 sound register, playing at a fixed rate, and having a relatively small number of notes (lets say 16. Since I havent done it yet) I'll need 16 notes (4 bytes each) = 64 bytes for my note table. I play back at a fixed rate (1 note per 1/5 second) so 256 notes (stored as an index to the note table) is another 256 bytes (128 bytes if I use 4 bits instead of 8) and that would give me 51 seconds of audio for my music before it loops. Thats tiny, but its also not going to be very good music. I would imagine Vegavox uses all 4 main sound channels and possibly the DMC channel. If his song was longer than 51 seconds, it would need more data. If he used all 4 sound channels, you are looking at at laest 4 times the data I listed above. If you dont use fixed spacing (I was usign 1/5 of a second) , additional data is required. If more than 16 notes are being used, you can use the simple byte paking I mentioned above, although compression would still be possible. I know that if the DMC channel is used, enormous amounts of space can be required) Al |

Very cool item, I picked up one as well. We have had lots of new NES projects lately with this, NWC repros, and the newly released PowerPaks. Very exciting time for NES right now. Thanks for the link.

Yes. But keep in mind that I have no musical talent. So all I am doing writing audio playback code and an audio composing tool so I can play "Feur Elise" by Beethoven. Its a public domain song, my version will suck, and I'm pretty sure no other NES games have it. I havent worked on it in over a week. Al |

I was wondering the same thing. Mine says #001-03. If they were # for collecting purposes that would rock, but I don't have a clue what they mean. :-?
