Title: How many games in your collection are really yours
Post by kazuo on 10. Jul 2007 at 04:51
The question is, how many games in your collection are originally yours; that is, you either purchased it during the NES' life span, or shortly thereafter (let's say 1995, the year NoA officially discontinued the NES)?

Further, how many of you can remember the first game you bought for the console? This does not include additional games your parents bought for you along with the console, assuming you weren't allowed to choose them. ("You" can be defined as your parents if you weren't old enough to afford games by yourself, like I was)

My collection isn't that big (less than 50 total), but of those, 10 are originally my cartidges.

The first cart I bought by my own choice was Castlevania. If I remember correctly, my mom also bought me Donkey Kong 3 with the console... and my Aunt bought Kung-Fu for my cousin (oddly enough, he didn't get his own NES, he was going to use MY NES to play HIS game! hahahha)

Second cart I got by my own choice was Mega Man 2. Damn, I have great taste. :D

Anyone else?

I have the orignaly 21 or 22 carts I had from my childhood.  My first game other than SMB (packed in) was Metroid or TMNT one.  Got the both on the same X-mas morning.  The first game I bought with my own money was Image Fight cause it was on sale for only 19.99 and that was cheap for a NES game back then.  Cool thread idea.

I don't think any of them are. :-?

The first game we actually had for the system was borrowed from a cousin, & it was Rygar.  That's why that game brings back so many memories. :)

Then was Metroid, from the same person but we ended up keeping it... then SMB, again from our cousin.

Next were Double Dragon II & Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! from my brother's friend... I don't know if he sold or gave them to us... either way, nice.

Then we got a whole bunch of games from an older friend who eventually got rid of his NES...

I guess when you get games from people you knew back then it gives them sentimental value.

Does anyone have any beat up games they wouldn't trade for the world because of this?  I have a Snake Rattle 'N Roll with a taped up hole in it received from a friend who moved to LA. ;D

I wouldn't trade my orignal NES system for a pile of cash, way to much sentimental value to me.  The only game I wouldn't sale is Dragon Warrior (even though I hate RPGs)  I have had it since I was a kid and still has my orignal files on it for now till the battery dies.  It is the only game I ever wrote I put a J for Jason on the top of it cause me and my brother both had one.

The only cart I have that I owned for my original NES is a 31-in-1 with adapter.  Its the only game of mine that my parents didnt see when they gave away my NES and games.

Back then I owned:

Super Mario Bros
RC Pro AM
Pro Wrestling
Top Gun
RBI Baseball (unlicensed)
Final Fantasy
31 in 1

The only one I bought myself was the 31 in 1 at a yard sale.

Unfortunately none of my current collection is from my childhood.  I have no idea what happened to my old NES or the games I had.  I'm assuming either my brother or sister took them.

My mom would always buy the few games I had, but I recall one occassion where I asked her if she'd go to the store and buy me Zelda.  I remember going to Wal-mart, seeing it behind the counter and being so excited to get it.  The gold box looked so amazing.

I don't have any from my original collect. Mine had my intials on the back so I wanted better ones.

The first game I can remember I got was TMNT cuz I loved the cartoon. I also remember playing:

Pac man
Zelda
clash at demonhead - so fun
yo noid - hard
boudlerdash -so fun

I got the Deluxe set when I was bout 7 years old it came with Gyromite and Duck Hunt and I thought they were awesome I used that ROB all the time.

My next 2 games were Kung FU and Mike Tyson Punchout I loved them both it took me so long to beat macho man.

I never had Super Mario Bros for years later  :)

The other thing I remember is borrowing my friends Zelda and playing his game (where he beat the 1st 4 bosses) when started I didnt understand why there was nothing to do when I went into the 1-4 castles

Dude, totally. I actually lent out my copy of SMB2 to a friend from back in the day, dude tried to steal it basically. Wouldn't give it back.

After prodding some people that knew him better than I did, and threatening to tattle on him (haha, fear of parents totally worked when you were a kid!), I got the thing back, but the upper 50% of the label is totally gone. :(

I can't get rid of it though, it's mine, and it's very special. Basically, all the original games I own, my mother bought for me, and I know it wasn't easy for her to afford the games, let alone the console. She actually refused to buy me a SNES when it came out, citing the fact that she bought me assloads of NES games, and I never played them.

That, of course, is total BS, but admittedly, I never played Rambo much.. not my fault, that game was such a turd back then, and the fact that it was so.. BIZARRE when you're little didn't help matters.

I also have special attachment to my Donkey Kong 3 cartridge because an old friend I lent it to tried to keep it as well, I got it back only after my mother went to the Principal's office at school, told them what was up, and his grandfather (coolest dude EVER!) drove right out to the school to return it to me. He gave his grandson a ton of shit for it, too.  ;D

Bastard even put his name on the back of the cart.  >:( Luckily it was on a sticker, so I just peeled it off.

MEMORIES!

Anyone else have similar experiences?

None

My Mom wrote "Morgan" on all my original carts from when I was a child, so I sold all of them for condition upgrades.

Probably about 30 or so.

I've too sold a few because of condition upgrading.

I was a lucky kid at the time.  :)

I still have 17 games i bought back then, all cart only. The prices were steep so i used to rent them and swap with friends.

I think I had 30-50 from my chldhood.  I never got rid of any gaming goodness, a friend borrowed one and never gave it back, thyat is okay because I always borrowed games when I loaned games out.

He got SMB 3 and I got his Doctor Mario, depending on taste it is a neutral or slightly bad "unnofficial trade" but I didn't lose anything since I played out SMB 3 at that time period.

I think I got it for my b-day in 1990 or 1991, whichever year it came out.

My parents were awesome, they bought me a lot of stuff.

I actually didn't own a NES until I was 14 or so. My original "collection" from those days was around 20 carts, by this time a lot of NES games were half price so it was possible to pick up games quite often :-)

I still kick myself for not picking up a brand new Tetris 2 (SCN) for $15 back then.

Actually I started collecting the minute I got my NES desk, so every boxed game I have owned is still CIB. Everything with a Nintendo logo was saved, be it candy bags (seriously), phamplets and so on.. Yeah I've been a nut for quite some time now heh

Well I have 28 of the original 35 or 36 games that I had from when my father had purchased them for me when my older brother and I were younger.  I believe my dad stopped buying us NES games in 1990.

All the 28 games I have have the original booklet with exception of Mike Tyson's Punchout  and Blaster Master which I have had  some trouble tracking them down.  Most of the games are in great cosmetic and working shape since my dad always bought us the hard plastic protective cases for the games.  Thats why I do not have boxes (he threw them out).  This is also why for my NES collection I just collect games and booklets, it makes them apart of my original collection.

I did ask my dad recently how he determined what games he bought us when we were younger and his response was he bought what looked fun.  I remember the last game I got for christmas in 90' was Rad Racer II.  My brother and I always got at least 1 games each and 1 game to share for christmas.  Birthdays we each got a game on each others birthday.  Amazingly I remember my 5th birthday in 1987 I got Original Mario Bros. and my older brother got Mike Tyson's Punchout.  It took us hours to get past Glass Joe that night.

These are the games I had as a kid and I still have all of them except for Kirby which was lent to my best friend and I never got it back.  But I did replace it.

-Mario 1/Duckhunt (came w/system)
-Donkey Kong Classics (received at the same time I got my NES for Christmas)
-Mario 2
-Mario 3
-Kirby
-Home Alone
-Ms. Pacman
-Hoops
-Star Tropics
-Star Tropics 2
-Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout
-Trog
-Little Nemo Dream Master
-Lolo 3 (this game is frustrating as hell)
-Wheel of Fortune

I think that's all of them.  I still have all their instruction manuals and their boxes.

haha, I've wondered this too.  I got my NES at a charity garage sale bundled with SMB.  My family didn't have much as a kid, but I did get the following:

SMB3
Zelda II
Cobra Triangle
TMNT
Star Trek Next Generation

I used to play SMB3 with my mom for hours.  We actually beat it one day too!  Pretty good accomplishment for a kid and a lady  :D
