Title: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by mikeroach113 on 12. Jul 2007 at 04:29
Seriously, NOBODY hated that game until the Angry Video Game JACKASS reviewed it. And I'll bet a large portion of his fans consist of people who weren't even born yet or just small children when the game was in its prime. This is one of Konami's best NES games, and it's an important part of their history. I was a fan of this game long before I was a fan of the movie, and I STILL love it today! I even went as far as to getting the japanese Famicom edition (Complete with the box and manual!) back in 2003. And it's EASY to land the plane, yet the Angry Video Game Retard LIES to the viewers saying it's impossible. And refueling is even easier. I've also realized that AVGN fans are some of the most immature, low life, degenerate slime alive. And I hope Viacom removes his Top Gun review for copyright infringement, because Viacom removes stuff that they own the rights to, and that's something I'd be more than be happy to see taken down. Anyway, getting back to the point. Has anybody else other than me been able to resist the AVGN, whose videos are like bad subliminal messages, and still like this game and not hate it just because he does? Sorry if I sound too over the top or whatever, but I have HAD IT UP TO HERE with this guy. He's putting several classic games to shame, and people are hating them just because he does!

It's definitely one of my favorite games. When I was younger and didn't know much about directional maneuvering on airplanes, I had a lot of trouble landing the plane, but when I went back to the game as an adult about a year ago, I had no problems landing. I got it first try and I was very surprised/relieved.
I've never seen the review, but I don't think it would anger me since I have a sarcastic sense of humor. I feel sorry for the people who let others' reviews manipulate their own views and ideals. |

I never read any reviews but I can say that I absolutely HATE that game.
I had actually forgotten that I owned it. It was one of the first games I ever owned. There was no battery backup, so you always started from the start each time you played. The missions were fine. The reason I hated the game is that I would almost ALWAYS crash either re-fueling or landing the plane. I didnt really feel like going through the entire mission only to crash at the end. I think if Mario in SMB1 died at the end of each level if he was unable to jump "over" the flagpole, people wouldnt like SMB1 as much either. Al |

That second review is more boring than Top Gun itself. :-/
Honestly, Top Gun seemed like an experiment; what NES games can do. The game itself is novel for being 3D. I think Second Mission really outshone its predecessor. But looking at the landing sequence, I noticed that on Second Mission it was easier. It kind of makes it seem broken on the first Top Gun: I was left with a message to pull up, but when holding down (to pull up) I was as high as I could be & still left with that message. It should've probably read "Speed Up" since that'd be your only option. :-/ |

I always loved the challenge of it personallly, and my father used to have a blast at it because he was in the Navy for awhile and I always watched him flawlessly land and fuel and such. I hate the nintendo nerd and thankfully he's started to overstay his welcome at gametrailers.com He's a total idiot and can't play anything right, nor does he have manuals to refer to that explain things he complains about. I think it's a great game, the dogfight segments are pretty boring and poorly programmed, but overall it's not that bad, especially for an early Konami release.

I couldn't land it as a kid, but now that I go back and play it its not too much of a problem.
Like everyone else said, its not bad for being one of the first games on the NES of its style. And the Angry Video Game Nerd isn't really funny to me. |

Title: Re: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by Stan Stepanic on 14. Jul 2007 at 14:51
His older reviews were somewhat enjoyable, but due to his contract with gametrailers he had to pull most (if not all) of them and now he's pressured to do reviews that will get hits. Thus, he recently did Silver Surfer and Die Hard, which were TERRIBLE. He exaggerates now and pushes the fact that he's angry, with quotes, even though it no longer applies really and just seems idiotic.

Amen, brother! And yeah, Silver Surfer wasn't as bad as he made it look, and Die Hard on NES was an awesome game! But now everybody is gonna hate both of those games just because he put them to shame. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention:Everytime on youtube when someone says they hate the Angry Video Game Nerd, they get attacked by AVGN's stupid ass-kissing fanboys. Like this kid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkvnyVtWlU0 Everybody is like wishing him death and stuff just because his different opinion on that crappity smacking nerd. |

Title: Re: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by Stan Stepanic on 15. Jul 2007 at 04:26
Well, it's not really a well-formed opinion at all. Someone needs to make a well done criticism of his 'work' so they can slowly spread the word of his suckage. The thing that gets to me the most is that over 90% of his fans are little, teeny weeny morons who don't even know anything about the games he criticizes. In fact, people in the NES scene totally hate him because of what he does. I don't think he'll last much longer though, he's really getting lame. I occasionally glance at what he's doing and his newest review, Independence Day for the Playstation, is an example of the direction he's going, which is a quick end. He has nothing left and doing random, old, sucky games won't get him anywhere now because the majority of his new fan base are people who don't have a clue what Color Dreams is or anything prior to the PS2.

Oh boo hoo, let the guy review and stop whining. It's ENTERTAINMENT, no one takes it seriously, it's not like his opinion changes the minds of people. Listen kid, we NES players on the internet have been ragging on how much of a piece of shit Top Gun is LONG before James decided to review it (Sadly most of these sites are long gone now...).
And if it does form the opinion of a few pre-teens, so what? They're pre-teen gamers who have never played the game before, they're never going to visit this forum and post their opinion, why get so bent out of shape and have a shit fit over it? Who cares? Screw them, all they play are shit games that are gameplay challenged. I mean, James reviewed a few games that I personally like (Castlevania 2, TMNT, MCKids), and did I go insane and start bitching because he bashed them? No, I laughed, because I found his rants on them to be so hilarious. And no, they're not wishing him death because he hates the AVGN, they're wishing him death because he's annoying and likes to stir the shitpot on a LOT of different topics. Plus he's all of 11 years old. I mean did you even LOOK at the guy's profile?! Quote:
That REALLY makes me fear the NES Scene, then. The guy has explained NUMEROUS times over and over that he's a parody, and that you shouldn't take most of what he says seriously. He's a FILMMAKER for pete's sake. He's not this world famous guy who's written books upon books about video games, and if they're good or bad. His videos are made for ENTERTAINMENT. And that's what everyone seems to have a hard time understanding. And for the record, I think Silver Surfer is a horrid piece of shit (And so do many others, this is why I miss the old days when there were numerous .com NES sites...). The game is flat out impossible. I also for the record have ALWAYS thought Top Gun sucked. I remember wasting $40 of my hard earned allowance on that crap. Quote:
You say this as if everyone has the manuals for their games...I think I have like, FIVE manuals to my 400+ games. Quote:
I have talked to many MANY gamers over my 27 years on this Earth, and you are the FIRST person I've EVER heard saying that. So kemosabe, explain, how is it "easy"? |

Title: Re: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by Stan Stepanic on 15. Jul 2007 at 20:06
So what sort of parody are we talking here? There's no parody. You can't say he's doing a parody of game reviewers because in fact he's being genuine when he's reviewing the games he does, AND they suck. Furious Famicom f*g**t shows what would be considered a true parody. This isn't parody, it's him trying to be funny by swearing using random combinations of some gross nouns and adjectives and bashing on games without really playing them as they were meant to be played. His older reviews were actually of games that truly do suck in many cases, and they're not that bad. But now all he does is swear and bitch and moan to get money. He did Silver Surfer not because it was the suckiest game on the planet, but because the movie was released and he'd get more hits with it. That's why he then did Die Hard, but as you can now see he's going to be struggling to find something to fit. He just did Independence Day, which I would hardly call 'retro' yet, and it doesn't even make any sense. The 'review' is half-assed and forced, regardless if you like him or not. The thing I don't like is this. Whether he is serious or not, the majority of people watching him and liking him BELIEVE what he's saying, meaning that they actually believe what he's saying is a legit opinion about the games, but it's not. When someone makes fun of an NES game, I like it to have a bit of depth and thought to it, like Sean Baby's NES site, which actually explains what he's talking about instead of jumping off a platform and exaggerating a game's difficulty while screaming I'd rather crappity smack a pile of festering badger viscera that was urinated on by a whooping howler monkey with the clap that squeezed out the pus. That's not funny, it's just annoying because he keeps doing it to the point that now he doesn't even make any sense. It saddens me that idiots with no creativity can throw shit like this out there when there are plenty of actual, good reviewers that get overlooked because people think swearing and falling on the ground is humor.

I just recently discovered the Angry Nintendo/Video Game nerd. I've enjoyed most of his stuff that I've seen, including his rants on games I count among my favorites. It's not high art, and he's no Seanbaby, and he seems to be a one-trick pony, but I've goten free entertainment from him. Actually, I've never played the NES Die Hard, but his review actually made me want to track down a copy. However, I think it's pretty funny that you spew such vitriol against the Angry Video Game Nerd for having a different opinion on some games you love and then defend this person because "his opinion is just different." |
|
Title: Re: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by Stan Stepanic on 26. Jul 2007 at 22:32
It's not that his opinion is 'just different' it's that he typically makes judgements based simply on exaggerated game faults so he can swear and make crap up. For example, in Silver Surfer he continuously dies during the flying pumpkin part when in fact it's not that hard at all. He keeps hitting them so he can keep swearing and make it seem like it's absolutely impossible to play. It's not. Damn hard, yeah, but really playable, I've beaten it without cheats. However, I must say that his newer review of Space Mutants and Bart World was actually very informative. It seems he may be listening to comments like mine a bit because he swore less, AND, finally, actually went into detailed explanations of game mechanics. Instead of just saying jumping in this game is like wearing rubber boots filled with festering, rotten quail eggs and buffalo shit while sinking in a pile of fecal offal residue from a neo-otygh, he actually explained things. If he keeps on that track, mixing it with a bit of humor, it could actually be really good. Hopefully he stays on this course, but we'll see.

Actually, I thought your comments on the guy were a lot more level-headed than mikeroach's. But I think a lot of you are criticizing him based upon the actions of his "fans." I didn't even know that he had fans, but then again I've been out of the NES scene for the past several years, and I never watch response videos on YouTube because they are nearly always painfully crappy. I watch his videos simply as a joke. The guy clearly has a love for old video games. And really, MOST of the NES games he has trashed really did deserve it. Despite the OP, I distinctly recall several people in elementary school complaining about the landing sequence in Top Gun. It's an often-cited problem. I never really cared for the game one way or the other, personally. But seriously, who is going to defend "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street"? The Simpson games really are awful. "Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu" was good for a ColorDreams game, but bad by most standards. Of course you're going to disagree with a few of his picks. MC Kids was a lot of fun, even if it did seem a little too much like a Mario game. TMNT was great, but it was tremendously frustrating. I remember being pretty ticked off when I finally figured out that I could walk across that little gap he falls through several times. Simon's Quest was great, but it did suffer from a few of the problems one tends to see in early console adventure games. But I think it just sort of wound up being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the AVGN. I mean, there are plenty of NES games with slow text that you can't skip. It's annoying in all of them. Quote:
Wait, so is it "not hard at all" or is it "Damn hard"? Or, I guess you just meant the pumpkin part. I really haven't played that game in about 13 years or so. My youthful evaluation was that it was unplayable, so I wound up using a game genie, but I only really had about an hour with the game, so maybe it's just one of those that you have to spend time with before it becomed enjoyable. Also, I hadn't really played many video games before that, so I wasn't very coordinated yet. Maybe it's like the NES version of Star Wars. I hated that game the first time I played it, but it grew on me quite a bit. It's still way too hard, though. You shouldn't have to memorize a game to be able to finish it. Quote:
Yes, I'd say you're probably right that the whole thing is more enjoyable with an explanation of the game mechanics. Other than Die Hard, I think I've played every NES game he's reviewed. I might get different ideas about the games if I had never played them and only had his "review" to form an opinion. |

Title: Re: Does ANYBODY still like Top Gun????? Post by Stan Stepanic on 28. Jul 2007 at 14:34
Not entirely, I hate his fans, yes, but I was hating more the fact that he was frequently exaggerating things when, in most cases, the people who like him never actually played the games and couldn't have a clue they're playable. The Simpsons review is good, so I'm happy about that, but some of his newer ones, especially that awful Atari 5200 review, are terrible. He simply just swears and doesn't really explain anything. And you're right about what I meant, I meant the pumpkin part isn't hard but the game itself as a whole is difficult. Nightmare is an awesome game! I love the soundtrack and the gameplay is fine, I don't know why anyone has a problem with it. Not the greatest game, but I thought it was rather unique when it came out. Would have been interesting to see the original version though, when I believe you were supposed to play as Freddy.

Top Gun wasn't really a horrible game, it just felt boring. I felt the need to sum the game up in four minutes so nobody else ever had to play it again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dmkeQMhIEM I'm stunned at how many people don't recognize the music from the video. Apparently they've never seen the movie. My theory about the landing in the first Top Gun is that Konami only watched about the first ten minutes of the movie, and then decided to base the landing sequence on the scene where Cougar almost botches his landing, by making it drawn out and tense-ridden. You could do worse than Top Gun. You could also do a heck of a lot better. |

I agree with you Stan. That's exactly what I've been trying to say. I mean, look at reviews by someone like Armake21 for example, he doesn't exaggerate anything, he explains why he thinks the game is bad, and goes into detail and doesn't make anything up. And plus, NOBODY HATES THAT GAMES HE REVIEWS JUST BECAUSE HE HATES THEM! And BTW:Armake's rage is unscripted. It's from the heart. |

Yeah, I shake my head at that too. Only way it could possibly be that fast was if you did a TAS and...well I don't know what you'd do after that. Haha, Armake made his video about Tengen Shinobi, then he saw my playthrough of it and saw what he was supposed to do for the helicopter boss. I can understand how someone would not know how to do that level. If you want to see somethign remarkable about the AVGN, go look at the comments for the trailer for the Captain S/AVGN crossover. His die-hard fans hated it because he never swore. |

I couldn't get through that last Top Gun video, either.
My favorite reviews are the ones where the person brings up the game on an emulator and then proceeds to record himself playing the game for the very first time ever where he clearly does not know what the heck is going on, all the while maintaining a repetitive commentary about how "broken" the game is. |
