Title: What's the best cleaning method for NES carts?
Post by p00piepants on 14. Jul 2007 at 18:40
I heard blowing and using Windex can rust the metal parts...eventually and that Rubbing Alcohol corrodes. Is any of this true? I'm getting kinda paranoid about doing anything at all and some help would be appreciated.

Well, IIRC, the contacts are copper, and copper corrodes, so it wouldn't rust. Also, yes, any kind of water, be it fro myour breath, windex or rubbing alcohol will cause additional corrosion in the connectors.

PROTIP: Water vapor is in the air

So you can't prevent it.

Best thing to do, IMO, is use isopropyll alcohol (the less diluted, the better; I use 91% which is easily available at drug stores, and I use 97% from time to time, which is available at electronic supply stores and online). Just clean the crap out the connectors and the inside, done.

With that, disabled lockout chip and a new kung-fu grip connector, everything works, first time, everytime, except for Punch Out and Metroid.

Hope that helps!

Hey thanks for replying, now I got a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol that says 50% by volume. I have no idea what that means... would that be good enough? [Ignorant]

It means you need to urinate in it to increase the salinity.

I like to eliminate the medium and simply urinate directly on the cartridges. I generally take this measure when dealing with dirty Akklaim titles.

I would say no. 50% is too diluted. I wouldn't use it on the carts.

Just go to your local drugstore, they should have at least 70% available. Mine all have 70% and 91%.

I take apart the carts (using a gamebit), then use Vim, an eraser and some paper towel to clean the connectors.   I probably should try the alcohol afterards, for the games I mean (Its poisonous)

My brother worked at a video game store where they cleaned up carts to sell them used, and the official cleaning method they stood by was Windex applied with a q-tip.  It works great, and it dries so quckly I would doubt any corrosion happens.
