It would have all the games you enjoy playing.

Some of the happiest NES collectors I know are the ones who do not have large collections, but instead have a smaller collection of their favorite games.

Size doesn't "always" matter :) No one is in a who has the biggest contest here, just get whatever you enjoy.  If that is a full set, great.  If that is 20 games, just as good.  When/if you get into variants and stuff is when you turn loony like some of us.  ;D

As far as titles of games go; Conta, SMB3, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out are essential.  After that the rest is just gravey.

I concur with this!  I tried collecting for awhile but realized that the games I love are the ones that should be in my "collection".  Although I guess the main games of the time frame SMB 1-3, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda, Punch Out!, and Contra should probably be in any collection.  Just don't try to buy them from local game stores!

For me, it is about my favorite games, like others have said (Tyson, SMB 1-3, Contra, DW 1-4), but it is also about (again, for me): Having what other people like.  Nothing makes me happier than when someone finds out I collect NES and says, "Oh, do you have XYZ? That was my favorite game!"  And I say yes.  Which leads me to my next point, having them all.  It's important to me to try to get every game, and some variants for fun.  At the same time, I have to live with the constant realization that as much as I've done and as many games as I have, I will never have them all.  I don't think I'll ever own NWC, Stadium Events, all 3 Panesians, Myriad 6-in-1, and others.  And that's ok.  Nobody ever says, "Do you have Hot Slots?  That was my favorite game!"  That being said, I never thought I'd own Rodland, either...

Bottom line, enjoy the search and discovering new games as much as playing them.  There will be a day when you run out of games to collect, and if you haven't lost interest by then, it's a bummer.   I will be checking Goodwill for Stadium Events until I am 95.

This is a fairly common question on other boards I frequent.  So I put together The Essential NES List for my site.  Nothing amazing, it just lists the top games for the NES.

i think this is turning into a must-have list:

a real nes collection should of course have your favorite stuff for the system.  theres probably about 10 must-haves and you should probably throw in like 5 games that are your favorite, irregardless of whether they are others.  here would be mine:

nes system (naturally)
two controllers
advantage controller

and here's my must-have (or i guess essential) list:
1. super mario bros/duck hunt
2. super mario bros 3
3. metroid
4. contra
5. castlevania
6. teenage mutant ninja turtles 2
7. kirby's adventure
8. legend of zelda
9. mega man 3
10. mike tyson's pun out

and here's my "other favorite" list:
11. castlevania 2
12. super mario bros 2
13. mega man 4
14. dynowarz
15. teenage mutant ninja turtles

if i were to ever sell off my collection-at-large, these game and a handful of others would survive the clearinghouse.

That's an interesting list, and a little surprising.

This is not criticism-- just curiosity:

Why did you choose Mega Man 4 over the others (except 3)?

What particular charms do you see in Dynowarz?

i'm glad you asked!

i'm the only person in the world that likes Mega Man 4, and here's the reasons:  its the first time (i believe anyway) that you have the slide and the M-buster.  on top of that, RushJet is controllable, you can speed him up or slow him down and determine which flight path he'll take.  in certain other mega man games, RushJet is less controllable.

i like dynowarz because it was THE first game i ever played on my own NES back when i got it for christmas in 1991.  i was really into dinosaurs, what can i say?

Wrong! In Mega Man 3 you can control Rushjet more.  He stops too.

I've got a collection of around 100 games and feel it is just about perfect, just have to get a booklet or box for the 15-20 loose games.

A real NES collection should have ALL released NES accessories released worldwide! :p

Seriously though, I agree that it should have whatever makes the collectors the most happy, which will most likely be games from their childhoods.

after collecting for 8 or so years i have about 100 NES games.

most of them i stumbled on or found quirkey.
i only ever play a few.
i enjoy owning all the titles i saw on posters as a lil kid and now i do.
for a while i chased rares and oddities, i still do but only buy them if i find them at a flea market or a bargain bin in a pawn shop or something, stuff shelling out big money on ebay

Yeah, there really isn't any criteria for what a real NES collection should have, everyone collects items of their interest and at their own pace, that's what collecting should be about anyway. ;)

I think I've been over 250, but now I'm weeding it down to my top 100 NES games.

I still have some quirky video game collecting, but I've decided that I'd rather collect what's important to me. That's the things I really want to collect related to video games, and then the games that I really want to play.

Some of the games in the 100 lot I have on ebay now are doubles, but some are games that I bought to collect but never played (or played once!).

Like others have said it should have the games you enjoyed playing. Don’t get me wrong but I think the “completist” are insane. There is no reason I would ever want for example a complete Festers Quest or Arch Rivals. I just recently started collecting NES games. I would suggest doing what I did going to Nintendo.com getting the complete NES list and then pasting it on Microsoft Word, then bold the games you want to collect. That’s what I am doing. I pretty much buy a lot of NES games on eBay with a few I want then test some, then sell the ones that suck.

I am a new member to this site and its sick! Awesome. :)
