Title: Super Mario Bros. Movie Post by limewater on 19. Jan 2008 at 21:16
The Super Mario Bros. movie featuring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper is widely reputed to be a terrible movie. However, I must confess that I picked it up in a sale for $5 in 1996 and absolutely love it. (Incidentally, in the same sale I got Dragon Warrior, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, and Dragon Warrior 3 all NIB for $5 each as well).
I don't know how many times I have seen it, but it has been a regular favorite for over a decade among myself and all four of my siblings. I am just curious if any other NES lovers who actually enjoyed the film. |

I enjoy watching it from time to time. I read one of John Leguizamo's books (He's one of my favorite actors) and he talked about how horrible it was to make that movie. The main problem was that the studio wanted the movie made for kids (obviously), but the directors, a married British couple, were trying to give it a darker, sexier, more adult theme...I think he also mentioned that the directors had never even played a game before.

Hehe yeah, i love the oldschool movies but also the toons. I still watch the cartoons from time to time ( on my PDA while travelling). The Mario show and those Zelda episodes, pretty fun to watch. :)

I used to love that movie, but then one time about two years ago, my friend Dan and I watched it for kicks, because he had never seen it before, and it was definitely not the same movie as I remembered. It just lost a lot of the magic for me, and I was disappointed.

I loved it, actually. I didn't really care how unrelated it was to the actual games. I actually love "Bad 90's Movies", though.
Hackers is probably my favorite movie. Close contenders are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghost in the Shell 2(not that GitS2 is low quality by any means). |

I've been a fan of the Super Mario Bros. film ever since it first came out{1993, which was also the year that I first owned a NES, after renting one for years/owning & playing the Atari VCS and the ColecoVision}.
At the time, its vague connection to my favorite game series{as well as my appreciation of Bob Hoskins} made it a must-see. In the years since, I enjoy it also for Dennis Hopper, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson, and Mojo Nixon{because it truly has an extremely eclectic cast}. On the way home from the theater, my mom and I had our first conversation regarding evolutionary themes, and that has always stuck with me. The fact that the sets were designed by the same team that worked on Blade Runner explains a lot, as does the fact that Roland Joffe and Annabel Jankel created Max Headroom. Lastly, there's an excellent fansite about the movie-full of behind-the-scenes info, interviews, promo items, etc. that I fully recommend: smbmovie.com |
