Title: the same ten games you see in every pawn shop...
Post by weaponjae on 10. Apr 2008 at 18:23
hey, i was thinking about this every day.  every time i go in a pawn shop or second hand store, they always seem to have the same ten games.  i've figured out it usually runs down like this:  you always have the ubiquitous mario/duck hunt, usually several, sometimes the mario/duck hunt/track meet, then you have about 5-6 really, really common games.  then theres about 3 or so sports games that i can never ascertain their commonality as sports games just never hit my radar, and then sometimes they have a semi-rare game that makes you go "huh, thats interesting."  here's my list:

mario/duck hunt
tmnt
blades of steel
tecmo football
top gun
mario 3
t&c surf designs
wizards and warriors 2
tengen rbi baseball
ms pac man

My list is not isolated to only pawn shops, but after around 8-9 years of frequenting thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets, these are the games I have seen more often than I would like to think about:

Captain Skyhawk
SMB 3
Bases Loaded
Top Gun
Super Mario/Duckhunt
Double Dribble
TMNT
Golf

...can't really think of a 9th or 10th one at the moment.

I think it's interesting how infrequently I have encountered some of the games on several of your lists.  Of course, I haven't been collecting seriously in about eight years, but I never really encountered Silent Service, Bandai Golf, Captain Skyhawk, or T&C Surf Designs very often.

Games I see a lot:

SMB/Duckhunt
Kung Fu
RBI Baseball
Nintendo Tetris
SMB3
Top Gun
TMNT
Play Action Football
Baseball
Bases Loaded

I live in the southern US.  Maybe that's why I rarely encounter Bladed of Steel.  Nobody here plays hockey.

bah, i see t&c just about all the time!  it always irritates me because when i'm scanning fast it has those bright colors and then i say "wait a minute" but then it turns out just to be that stupid monkey on a surfboard.

i hate that monkey.

same, i also haven't collected seriously in a number of yuears but wow do thrift/pawn shops still stock these, for the life of me i can think of anyone other than the odd collector who would be buying them.

i used to see a lot of the old HES titles.
flea markets just have the most random assortment of gear ever, a lot of master system stuff.

i would have to say my local pawn shops now just have tonnes of PSX stuff...even the stoners wont buy it
