Title: nintendo entertainment center Post by weaponjae on 06. Jul 2008 at 16:08
i thought i'd post about this. i got the idea from i think here somewhere, where someone had built a large scale model nintendo and was going to use it for an entertainment center. i took mine a little different route and made some modifications: since its only 5:1 scale, it wasn't tall enough, so my dad and i are building an attached box to the bottom of it (which has made the project infinitely more hard); the unit will still have a shelf where the cartridge goes that flips up, but it also has a second shelf right under that has a door (hidden in the nintendo's design) that flips down; the unit is also only 2 feet deep so that it wouldn't stick out like 8 feet into my living room. we're about 3/5ths done with it so far. i'm going home (i live in greenville, nc, and my parents live in goldsboro, nc, about 45 minutes away) tomorrow to work on it some more and i'll take a picture of the work in progress.
also, if anyone could link me to the guy's site that did the first nintendo entertainment center that would be great. i'm sure that whoever it is probably posts here, so sorry i can't remember your name and am too lazy to look up your website. :) |

so the whole shebang is done, save for the lettering. im still hung up on the font and how im actually going to get the letters onto the blasted thing, but im bringin it back from my parents house where i've been building it on my monday because im just sick of my old entertainment center. kudos to NGD and having the original idea that i stole! :) |

these were all taken with a camera phone. i didn't start taking them early on in the process, which i'm bummed about, but meh:
this is before we put the doors on. as i said before, i went with two inside shelves because it makes the thing more functional, and you can barely tell the door is there when its closed. i also decided not to have the top door open like an nes's cartridge slot because then it would just be obnoxious: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/07-14-08_1352.jpg close up of the controller ports: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/07-21-08_1524.jpg this is a front/top/side view, before i cut the grooves for the top vents, but the doors are now on. it was a bastard trying to figure out how to get them to work like i wanted them. the top door actually turns on two nails we almost magically drove into the thing, and is held up with a small metal foot on a hinge that we built. the bottom just opens and uses normal hinges: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/07-21-08_1523.jpg here is after i cut the grooves where the vents would be. i thought about making them functional vents, but i figured that would just be a way to suck in dust and really screw things up: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/07-21-08_1653.jpg here is a view after the thing was halfway painted: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/07-27-08_1609.jpg here is a front view (with a fat jack russell terrier) of the entertainment center. i used a simple reflector for the power led instead of a functional light. not as fancy, but i was tired of cutting holes and ghetto rigging things to work on this thing. oh, and sorry its sideways: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/weaponjae/08-01-08_1554.jpg now all thats left is to put the lettering on it. im right now fixing them (as in paint shop pro is open and i'm doing it as i type) and going to print them on bumper sticker paper and hope that works. its sitting in my living room and once i get the letters on im taking some more pictures to show the thing in action. |

How long is yours? It doesn't seem very large from the pics, but it does look nice. I had a company send me free decals for mine that were professional quality and look great.
Here is mine for those who haven't seen it http://www.nationalgamedepot.zoomshare.com/2.html ~~NGD |

everything is 5:1 scale except for the depth, which is just 2 feet. its about 2 feet high and 4 feet and some change wide. the actual nintendo part is about a foot and a half but with the "box" that it "sits on" its 2 feet.
yeah, i knew about the free decals, but i wanted to see if i could do it, and its proving to be the hardest part. theres some window decal paper that im going to try next, cause the bumper sticker paper is just frustrating. looking over the specs for yours, its about half the size. i definitely cant sit in the thing! |

update: after trying three different kinds of at-home printable sticker paper, and thus wasting about 30 bucks, i'm frazzled trying to figure out a good way to put the stupid lettering on the thing. i'm now trying techjet. i wanted to try and tackle the lettering myself, but there doesn't seem to be any way to feasibly print decals, and im not really that great with a brush...

Nice work weaponjae. I like how yours is smaller. It makes it much more usable as an entertainment center.
