Hey, I'm looking to do some retro gaming, and please throw out the HARDEST games on the system. They can be broken, or just impossible by design. Please specify if they're broken or impossible by design, the number of people that can play, the genre, and the title. Thanks a BUNCH!

Is this some kind of homework you're giving us....

Hard as in: it was poorly developed and playing it is near impossible? Or beatable but takes a few tries? Or hard because there are no continues or codes?

nesgame: captain planet. worst game, very hard.

Deadly Towers is that unique combination of difficult *and* poorly designed.

For me it's Battletoads. Also Conan I found pretty hard and a bitch to beat.

Kid Icarus was a pain. It has continue codes though, but still takes a while.

only the first megaman. batman is also a fun game but the joker..grr >:(

battle kid its hard but its fair if you die its coz you messed up not because of bad design or glitch but unlimited continues means you can keep plugging on

I would have to throw out Silver Surfer into the pile.  Not so poorly designed, just the way its gameplay is setup. No health bar, only one hit and your dead, enemies everywhere.

I agree! That game kicked my ass. I still sometimes pull it off the shelf for kicks, but its hard as shit!

Battletoads, easily.  It requires total memorization to complete it.

I would have to say ninja gaiden is the hardest trilogy on nes.

Are all the ninja gaiden games actually beatable?

I thought I'd read or heard somewhere that one of them (probably 2) could not even be beaten.

I remember renting Ninja Gaiden back in the late 80s.  Fun and tough.

I think Timelord was by far the hardest.  I could not pass level 4 (I think, it's been a while).

Timelord has to be the only game I never passed for the NES.

Ghost and goblins is my pick two hit your dead thing makes nearly impossible to do anything.

Yep, Deadly Towers is ridiculous.  They tried to pack way too much into that game and were way ahead of their time with it. 

Give someone in the N64 era the plans for that game and it would have turned out well.  But the NES just couldn't handle it.

Yeah, when thinking about pain, then Ninja Gaiden definitively comes to mind. There're a bunch of Famicom games utterly frustrating too, such as Valis or the two Transformers games.

Turtles 1 going through that last hallway before Shredder.  It's actually not that bad once you got it down (using that scroll weapon).  The first several times you play it though, good luck.  Also getting to and defeating the Technodrome was pretty hard too. 

You can't argue with battletoads. with 1 player it's hard, but with 2, it's virtually unplayable. What does that Ipad case 2 stuff have to do with my post? :-?

I think deadly towers and turtles are quite harder and the worst games I have ever played.

I'm just gonna say the Adventure of Link since I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet. Even the little enemies do some pretty intense attacks (like that boomerang throwing bastard)

But if I have to make a solid decision I'd say Super Mario Bros. 2j: the Lost Levels. That game frustrates me a lot.

Holy Diver. Much more difficult than BattleToads. It's just it's so obscure no one has played it. It's for the Famicom. Good luck finding the game... If you want the game on an NES cartridge, just go to The NES Dump and look under "Translations" or "Translated Famicom" (I forget which)... Anyway, it's extremely hard and it requires precision timing, skill, memorization, and honestly, lots of trial and error.

My vote is going to be Ninja Gaiden. One thing that really pissed me off was dying on Malth and being sent back 4 stages. After the battle with Malth the stages get insanely difficult. To me at least.

Have you ever tried Milon's Secret Castle without a guide?

Yeah, it is, it's just extremely frustrating. I beat it without a guide EVENTUALLY, but it took a lot of random guessing and replaying. Darn that one-death = game over trickery.

It depends on the player then the game.

Take Bill and Teds adventure threw time or Bakc to the future.
Then all of those games that think the NES is an Atari.

Battletoads, Deadly Towers, Ironsword, Ninja Gaiden series, and mainly Q*Bert for me.

Hakan, I'm glad I'm not the only one.  Put in roughly 60 hours, give or take, in 3 years before I finally beat it.  Stupid random spawning imps causing me to plummet like a stone :P  Loved the game though, but I'm pretty sure that's just me :P

I just beat Castlevania (ONE) and it took me 10 hrs....   It wasn't easy!

i was beasting on some "Terra Cresta" last night!
got to level 3, got  half way through 3 then died(all on one credit) that was pretty hard as its a *one hit=death* game.
another hardy is "Super Spy-hunter 2" there are no gamegenie hacks :(

castlevania II easy. I beat battletoads, blaster master metroid and so on (even paperboy) but I have never beaten simon's quest

Simon's Quest is easy once you know what to do.  What part do you have problems with?
