Title: Why Doesn't My Zapper Work on An LCD TV?
Post by Burridge on 19. Jun 2011 at 00:56
So I brought my NES downstairs to play some duckhunt on the Lcd tele. Started the game and no matter how accurate you are with the Zapper you can never hit anything (making that btard of a dog laugh at you -,-) It's not the Zapper that's the problem as it's perfectly accurate on my CRT tv so I'm just wondering why it won't work on an lcd.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Sorry, Zappers don't work on flat screen TVs.
Zappers use the light reflecting off of the TV and flat screen TVs have anti-glare coating.

An old style   CRT  TV draws the screen by having a ray travel across the screen and down line-by-line.

When a zapper is pointed at the screen the game is told to repeatedly read the sensor in the light gun.   If you point at the middle of the screen, the zapper will read as un-lit until that portion of the screen is drawn.

I do not know what happens with LCD TVs, but I think the entire screen is shown at the same time, and I do not know if the intensity of the light is strong enough to indicate trigger the sensor in the lightgun.

I remember hearing about people pointing their light guns at a lightbulb to try and cheat for some zapper games.  (maybe wild gunman?)  I suspect the game programmers could easily detect this by making sure the sensor reads as blank during VBLANK period.
