Title: Underated NES Games?
Post by ThatNerdyKid on 13. Jan 2013 at 02:14
Well guys, I'm 13, and instead of getting a new PS3 or an XBOX for Christmas, I got an NES 2. I've decided to take on NES collecting, and so far I've gotten 25 games. (11 of them are my cousin's that he kept from when he was a kid) Right now, I'm looking for some underated gems for my collection, games like Metal Storm. So, what are some of your personal recommendations?

That is pretty cool that your into NES at that age in this day and age. What are the games you currently own?

It's nothing to brag about right now, but it's a good start. The most notable game is Tengen Tetris.

I see you have Blaster Master and Star Tropics~ Those are really great gems~

Gems are in the eye of the owner so i cant give you any info. on that but i can give you a list of a few games i think every NES owner should try. (try them all too, lol)

Bubble Bobble
Mega man 1-6
Rad Gravity
Punch Out!
Ninja Gaiden 1-3
Batman
Double Dragon 1-3
Ninja Turtles 1-3 (TMNT 2 is the best)

These are some of the first games i owned and loved and brought me lots of hours of entertainment.

Bionic Commando is pretty fun.

The Dragon Warrior series can be fun (or can be timesome since you do a lot of grinding to get up in abilities).  DW1 is usually pretty cheap too.

I don't know if either of those is considered under-rated though.

That is nice "hobby" right now. Just as long as you are not playing videogames it is a okay. You should also check this thing out called the Turbografx as well.

"Just as long as you are not playing videogames"

Too late.

If your concerned about the games' pins being damaged, I play them on the toploader, so they should be fine.

And yeah, I've heard of the Turbografx. It's really impressive considering it's an 8-bit system, but I have no intention of getting one at the moment.

Here's a few games I don't hear much about that I like:

-Mighty Bomb Jack
-Solomon's Key
-Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (I liked it when I was a kid)
-Mighty Final Fight

Toobin... Stupid but addictive...:)
Big Nose the Caveman.. (See above)

Looks like you have a couple real good ones in Adventure Island and Rockin Kats. You might try Yo Noid, it may get under your skin...

I picked these because they are fairly inexpensive, and have good bang for the buck.. :)

I hope no one minds a slight bump to this thread. I'm at least sticking to the topic, and it's not THAT old.

Anyway.. A couple games to add:

The Legend of Kage
Kabuki - Quantum Fighter
The Little Mermaid (Surprisingly decent, but a bit easy and short)
Super C (Sequel to Contra. I don't hear about it very often compared to contra.)
Felix The Cat
Shatterhand
Journey to Silius
Shadow of the Ninja
Clash at Demonhead

Ah, a young NES collector. Don't find those often, we definitely need more of those in the world. Considering I am pretty young to collect these games (11 young enough for ya?) I currently have 35 games in my collection with the most rare and valuable one being MegaMan. :) If you want a good obscure game, try Krazy Kreatures. A fun unlicensed puzzle game.

Underrated/overlooked:

"Wizards & Warriors"
"Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II"
"Snake Rattle & Roll"
"Kickle Cubicle"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (the first one)
"Tetris" (Tengen version)
"Krazy Kreatures"
"T&C Surf Design" (the least horrible of the LJN games)

Most under rated games EVER in my opinion are Power Blade and Little Samson…

Batman: Return of the Joker

Great game, deserves more attention.

The Punisher

Arcade style action, controls are ok. Worth only a few bucks so it can be tried out without spending a lot.

If you buy a good and fun game then your going to play it, otherwise your buying a paper-weight. I have tons of those.

I highly recommend a little gem called "The Magic of Scheherazade". You can find it for dirt cheap complete in box in just about any retro game shop, and it's worth picking up. It's an action RPG/Traditional turn based RPG hybrid, and it mixes the two genres wonderfully. I'd recommend following the guide on the "Scheherazade Shrine" for the first chapter to get things started, but do the rest of the game blind. It's one of the least known about NES hidden gems.

Another semi-hidden gem on NES is "Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos". It's a game you'll want to look up scans of the manual before playing so you know what your goals are, but after you learn, it's a very fun game to try and figure out.
