Title: Help with N64 backup devices
Post by DugiHowser on 17. Jan 2013 at 06:26
Hello all!
I am new to the site and I hope I do not come off like a noob. I am looking for a back up device V64, Z64, V64jr etc.. I have come across a V64 and am thinking of buying it however, I just read the Gameshark post about dumping roms and now I'm having second thoughts. I'm also thinking of getting a Neo Myth 64 but am not sure if you can make backups with it. Any insight on this would be fantastic! Thank you in advance..

Yeah the Gameshark Pro can do backups, although it always overdumps and it's incredibly slow, The V64(jr)/Z64 will make an spot on backup of the cartridge, no overdump.

With that said, V64/Z64's are unable to dump N64 prototypes if the header isn't correct, the GameShark on the other hand doesn't care... it'll back up anything N64.

Now why is backup so important to you? I mean almost nothing need to be backed up and if you want to play roms i highly suggest getting a flash cart instead of an old copier, flash carts like the 64drive or Everdrive64... not the NEO Myth 64 which is absolute junk.

Their is a hoarder on Assembler with over hundreds of V64's.

Personally in todays world their is no need to make a backup of a N64, games due to the backups ready.

However if you are working on a project using the

GoldenEye engine
Starfox engine

then you might need a Doctor or V.

Well I'd like to back-up some of my Japanese titles which I cannot find a good Rom of. Ones I found have visual or sound issues. I am also looking into the development part of it ie, re-texturing or even creating homebrews. If anyone can point me to any N64 developer programs or software that can recode, retexture, or just complete create N64 roms please let me know. I'm starting game design in the fall and would love to practice and work on my beloved n64 games.

BTW: I just got my 64Drive in but like a noob I can't install the menu! Its a BIN.file and I used Daemon tools and magiciso and I get errors. Anyone have the same problem?

.bin means "binary" it's not an iso image, although it could be with an extension like that I guess :-)

All you need to do is copy the bin file to the root of the CF/microSD card.

There is a N64 forum with tons of N64 nuts over their. Go over their and then come back with the answer, for that.

The only problem I could think of backup, is the speed of the computer vs the console.

Back then ( when things were straight ), most devices never knew when the data was approaching, but the speed was 200Mhz so it did not matter, for a videogame system
so much.

What do you mean by that's not an option?... not an option to copy it to the root of the CF/SD cart? ehhh yeah it's the only option you have otherwise it won't work..

What does the SD have to do with installing the menu?

You don't have to "install" the menu... the menu is a binary file, umm like an EXE file, when the 64drive boots it looks for menu.bin and if it's present on the SD or CF in the root, no subfolder... then it'll load the menu file.

There's no installation required.
