Title: Superman 64 (Prototype) ROM fundraiser
Post by Martin on 03. Feb 2013 at 23:08
So here's the deal. A few weeks back I acquired an early prototype of Superman 64, quite different from the final product. Instead of letting it sit on a shelf I'm offering the ROM to be released for everyone to play, IF we're able to raise...

$350 (donations sofar $290) ... $60 to go!

Donations can be made using Paypal to "nesworld@email.dk"
Please write "Superman" in the donation title, please :-)

Donation deadline is March 31, 2013. If the goal isn't reached by then, all donations will of course be refunded.

Thanks to:

Cheaterdragon1 ($10)
Olivieryuyu2000 ($130!!!)
ImpulseX ($5)
CoinCollector ($20)
Nekojin ($125!!!)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Well even though the goal hasn't been met, I've decided that now is the time to release the ROM, thank you to everyone who has donated and if anyone feels like donating the rest to meet the goal, you are more than welcome to do so and I thank you :-)

Now here's what you've been waiting for.... or some of you at least....

ROM available here:
https://mega.co.nz/#!kl12lZYA!ZVdFyziJBH2wWS6KK4bF6Vjp0G1e3M2lub5v-Bs9KDc

----------------------------------------------------------------

Some may say that I'm holding the ROM captive and want a ransom, but I'm simply just making an offer, if you do not like the offer and won't participate, fair enough.. just don't complain please.

A video was made by RarewareCentral of this very cart, so this is what the game is like:

Thank you for this opportunity Martin. I've played through the released game from beginning to end on the hardest difficulty. It sure was awful. I know this game has a real interesting history to it so I do look forward to seeing how exactly they ended up with the final product.

Just made a small donation.

i never actually played through the final released game, but can you tell me (us) the difference between the finished and prototype product?

pretty much boils down to "no rings" :-)

I haven't done a full comparison, nor do I wish to, but it's said to be very different.

Damn... what an awesome donation, are you sure about that?

Title: Re: Superman 64 (Prototype) ROM fundraiser
Post by Nekojin on 24. Feb 2013 at 12:44
Yes I am. Since the game differs significantly from the final game, I believe this is worth getting released, and I am happy to contribute to it.

I only hope that the goal will be reached :)

Wow thanks for the early release! Just tried it out and the controls are much different from the final release. Just like the final version of Superman, the colours will be screwed up in an emulator.

I need to get a flash cart!

Yeah, wasn't expecting an early release.  A thousand thanks Martin!  Who cares about the naysayers, eh?  This stuff has gotta be preserved.

And thanks to the other donors too!  Those are some pretty big sums from some of you guys - much appreciated.

Thanks for this release. I had a look at the guts of the game, but couldn't find anything beyond the main seven levels.

Thanks for the codes, SubDrag. I'll have a look at the beta levels.

I can't seem to get this code to work. It crashes Project64 when I load the third level.

Maybe you need to activate it after level loaded.  Been a while since I did it though.  Annoyingly, you can only load guards from that level too, it doesn't load all the levels, so not all work either for there, I think it disappears if not valid for level.

Thanks very much for the codes SubDragon! Unfortunately I too cannot get the character mod to work. You indeed have to start the level and then turn the code on to avoid the crash, but nothing actually changes with the code on.

I've played through the game for a lot of today and managed to beat 5 levels without any Gameshark codes or cheats. Has anyone managed to find the freeze breath powerup on level 3 though? I have to use the Infinite Freeze Breath cheat, but otherwise that level is completely beatable.

OK so in order to get all levels working, you need to turn code in in resume menu, then turn it off.  Then turn on 81291EDA 00XX and it will change guy.    And remember annoyingly only can load items already on level, or global. Which is a shame because I really want to see how some of them fight.

Don't see any beta menus:

801A0A45 menu mod main
8019EA6D menu mod ingame (0, or else)

These are from bio mod. Jaxus and Mala are so cool there, and I think other two things are beta too. Can't believe Jaxus/Mala didn't make final.

Definitely, I reallllly want to be able to see all models in game, but that hack is eluding me.

This is one of the cooler codes too, using same digit as above (only if guard in same level), level 3.
Play as:
Level 1: 8028EE07 00XX
Level 2: 8028E78F 00XX
Level 3: 8029094B 00XX
Level 4: 8026FD57 00XX
Level 5: 8027569F 00XX
Level 6: 8026F99F 00XX
Level 7: 8026D5FF 00XX

If you pick 02, you're a Dark Shade, and can even fire the gun!

Assuming each guard has something like an
guard->Attack
guard->Die

Cause when you die it goes into a whirling ball too.

So far here's whats loaded initially on each level.  Maybe more loaded as walk, not sure.

Level 1: 00/8B/03
Level 2: 00/DC/DD/14A/F0/F1/F2/E6/02/7D/50/6E/1F5/04
Level 3: 00/D2/C8/7D/1F6/1F7/1F5/6E/02
Level 4: 00/D2/08
Level 5: 00/16/8F/0C/16
Level 6: 00/EC/FA/7D/14A/1F9
Level 7: 00/F3

Dug more, and there's a reason can't just separate any object. Each level is just a massive precompiled set of data, including displaylists, etc, with already defined pointers, so it only loads what's available for level.

Title: Re: Superman 64 (Prototype) ROM fundraiser
Post by SubDrag on 08. Jun 2013 at 04:39
OK I was able to load all of the Guards to a map (well as much as they exist).

These three are playable as enemies:
13 Darkseid
14 Round blue mechanical thing
15 Robot on wheel

13 just kinda walks around, 14 opens and closes, while 15 wheels around and attacks.

The rest listed are used in maps in beta, or don't appear to be intended for an enemy and don't appear. Professor Hamilton crashes for some reason ingame.
09 Clark Kent
0A Lois Lane
0B Lex Luther
0E Jaxus
10 Mercy Graves
11 Perry White

In case, you're curious, all of the guards, are statically linked in, which means you really can't combine the same guards in different levels.  Kinda silly...

The games already bad but a prototype is even scarier.
