Does anyone here know anything about the codes and why some black boxes have them and some don't? I've only seen 'non-code' boxes on those black boxes which only came out as 5 screw, but I don't usually buy unsealed completes so I probably wouldn't see nearly as many examples. So if anybody has any insight that would be awesome.
From what I've been able to gather in my black box variations quest (hence the 100 Gyromites which, BTW, there are 3 different versions, of which the "Made in Japan" one is the rarest), some games have more box variations than others. For example, the more popular games like Golf tended to have the full gamut of box variations:
hangtab, no code, sticker seal, black/gold seal of quality
hangtab, no code, no sticker seal, black/gold seal of quality
non-hangtab, no code, black/gold seal of quality
Rev-a, non-hangtab, no code, black/gold seal of quality
Rev-a, non-hangtab, code, black/gold seal of quality
Rev-a, non-hangtab, code, white/gold seal of quality
Games that were re-released as Rev-A games, there appears to be most of those box variations. Games that didn't make it to Rev-A got the first 3 of those variations. There are even more minor box variations that aren't listed there, such as the code in the upper left corner of hangtab boxes -- some came with it, some didn't. From what I can tell, games that came in non-rev-a non-hangtab boxes can be either 3 or 5 screws -- I think this may have been a transitional period.
