Collectors opinions ?
17. Aug 2006 at 23:17

Well I am just starting out collecting and I am looking for opinions ? As of right now I have approximatley 60 games all (cart only).  Now I am at a cross roads I can either go back and start finding boxes and manuals for all these games OR just continue on collecting carts. So what I am wondering you guys who have gone down this road before and bought all (carts only) do you regret not buying in boxes ? I just don't want to get to far into this then decide I wish I had boxes. Or my other option could be collecting mostly carts and only buying the rares and classics in boxes ???

I am confused ........

I bought all cart only starting out, and man it sucks finding boxes and manuals.  I would tell you to get the CIB now, you will be glad later own.  I have been lucky finding them, I haven't paid more than 1.50 for hardly any of the ones I have, and I am nearing having a full CIB set now.  CIB is a way better route to go man, especially if your into collecting for the long term.

I think it depends on what your actual aim in collecting is! If your aim is to collect games you enjoy playing, and the games you're buying are for playing purposes it doesn't really matter to much! If you're aiming to collect say a complete NTSC or PAL set or something along those lines, and have a set aim then getting hold of boxed games is probably the way forward! It all depends No one method of collecting is right, because there's always a next level to take it to ie you start out buying cart only, then move onto boxed, then decide what you want to concentrate on (PAL, NTSC, Famicom etc), then complete a games list, then move on to box variations, then collect ltd editions etc etc.

if you have the smallest idea you may want a complete set  i would go  for complete games ..yes  trying to track down boxes and manuals is very hard and you end up paying a lot more in the long run..I started going for a loose collection but once i got all the carts i decided to go after complete and ended up buying a lot of games complete just to get the box or manual..plus complete games look so much cooler on the shelf  Cool

Well I am already at the point now where I wish I had boxes for my current collection so I am really leaning towards  going back and completing them before buying any new games.  I just want some opinions from people who have "been there" ..lol. I know it might be more expensive to buy complete now but it will be a real pain to find boxes and manuals later on. (maybe even more expensive with shipping cost etc.) Still confused ......

I don't actively collect boxes, and I only incidentally collect manuals (when they pop up, I get them, and I keep them archived). I have a few boxes on display that look nice, but it's part of my set-up, like my lego Mario sprite and my console boxes...I'm not a completionist in that respect, just a nintendo collector and lover.

That said, I'm not worried about completing my loosey set, then deciding to go back and get boxes. If I want to complete later, and wind up buying CIB games I'll just resell the double carts.

Long story short...I get as much as I can, and I don't resell anything that's not a double. Accessories, boxes, whatever...I keep it. Because what sucks worse than passing up an opportunity to get a complete game when you're only collecting loose...is siezing the opportunity, then getting rid of the extras...and regretting it later.

I only collect cart only and I know I will not think back and wish I had collected boxes/manuals. Not only is it harder it will cost LOTS more. I like my carts to be as mint as I can find them and finding mint boxes/manuals would be hard.

As for when I get a complete collection (which I'm only about half way done) I will start buying more SNES and N64 games. So I will never be done collecting.

If I happen to get boxes/manuals it doesn't matter for what game I will trade them for games I don't have.

So I say if you don't mind spending the extra money and don't care about the condition of the boxes as much (I would want mine MINT) then I would start getting the boxes/manuals.

You may wish to consider how you will define a complete collection. Some carts are available "cart only", like test carts. And are you willing to spend the thousand bucks for the couple of CIB's that can hit that price.....or always saying "almost a CIB collection" forever. I collect cart only. I have hundreds of books/boxes stashed away, but never even try to get the CIB. And it gives a looser freedom and ease to enjoy the collecting part. There are definitely two ways to collect!

I think I am going to take the middle road. Mostly carts with classics and rares in boxes when I come across them. You guys are right there is no way to ever have a "complete" cib collection that is "MINT". I also like the carts perfect so Id imagine even creases in the boxes would piss me off ... lol Oh and sealed isn't an option for me .... I like to know whats in the box it would drive me mental.  Grin

I would recommend buying CIB games in bulk lots, pull the ones you need and sell off the rest. If you buy them one at a time, it's going to get expensive quickly. By buying them in bulk, you can effectively recoup a lot of your money be then turning around and selling off your extras, one at a time. Wait to sell the extras until you have a decent amount built up -- CIB games always go for more when you have a bunch to sell at once.

i think it mostly depends on your wallet size and what you want to spend.  sure we all want the boxes, but its too damn expensive for me.  if i see a box in the wild, i will keep that one and sell the cart i already have.

Amen to that!

I collect everything i get my hands on, that i dont already have. wheteher it be for any system. But my favorite thing to collect is NES, i have over 650 different NES games and about 130 of them complete. i plan to one day get em al complete but I just wanted to get them all cart only first, and the complete ones i do have i just ended up getting them through good deals only. But i wanted to play all the games and was anxious too. I didnt wanna restrict myself from buying games i dont have because i wanted to complete the ones i did have. It was more of an issue like "i gotta get em all to play em all" lol. but now im getting closer to a complete collection so when i get all the carts it will then be time to get all the boxes/manuals.

thats my thoughts Smiley

I tell you what.  You can't play a box.  That is just how I look at it.  I would consider myself a quasi avid collector and the vast majority of my games are cart only.  As of today, after a good find on Rainbow Islands, my collection stands at 317 games and several accessories.  It comes down to what you are into.  Is it the love of the games or the love of collecting games?
