HES Black & White Labels
24. Sep 2006 at 01:38

Some of the rarer HES games have B&W labels, but I just recently found one that I didn't know about: Arctic Adventure. There was a BIN auction on ebay a few weeks ago that had a trashed box but something told me to buy it anyway.

Check it out (look under the Additional Images section:

Pretty cool. I'm so happy I don't collect variants (unless they are Color Dreams). Those harder to find HES games would be a pain in the butt to find in both versions especially if Pipemania had a colored label o.O

Any clue as to why they were released in b&w as well as color?

I personally think it's because of cost of production -- as the NES market started to die down, I think they likely switched to cardboard boxes and black & white labels (and even plain paper manuals, i.e., Pipemania). It would have saved a lot of money I'd imagine. The later releases (or versions) also didn't have the passthru or dongle, so there's another money saver for hardware. Those are just my guesses though.

That would make sense. I didn't even realize the cardboard box other wise that would have hinted me off Tongue
