Looking for Gyromite (or others) with converters
17. Oct 2006 at 15:19

Any condition cart is fine, I'm really just after the converters.  I'd consider carts or loose converters (black box part and 72-pin part.)   I'd love to buy 2 or more at once, let me know what you have.  Thanks!  See my other post for a trade list.

To my understanding, *some* first release NES games (such as Gyromite) had converters, but Stack-Up is guaranteed to have a converter inside.

Stack-up is probably worth more than I'm looking to pay, but thanks for the tip!  I've had good luck with Gyromite and Gumshoe, but usually Gyromite is a cheap game that's worth a shot.

You're going to have lots of trouble just asking people for games with converters.  If you want to find them cheap, you'll have to hunt them down for yourself.

Yeah, I tried this around here a while ago and got no response.  I think I offered $5 each plus shipping.  I now think I was pretty silly.  The converters are pretty coveted by collectors so they aren't easily let go.  I've found a few good deals and trades, but usually I've ended up paying around $12 shipped for a stack-up.

That's surprising, mainly because they are in such cheap games (except stack-up).  I sold I think 3 to a guy a while bak on here for a couple bucks a peice, of cource now I want them back.  Thanks for the warning, I guess I'll just head to the flea market.

Well I remember someone (here or on another forum maybe) saying they had bought quite a few Gyromite carts in their search without getting a converter.  Could've been a run of bad luck, or it could be some kind of regional rarity thing.  Who knows.

I always thought they were common, I figured people would have some saved up.  Oh well, I'll keep looking locally.  It wouldn't be worth a trade for anything other than another common.  If I get extras, I know where to come!

Someone must represent those of us who know too little....so here goes. What is the usefulness of these convertors, and why would there be an interest in them?

Every single Gyromite cart I've ever had I opened up in hopes to find a converter, but I've never found one.  I've probably owned around 8-10 copies of the game in my life.  Perhaps I'm just really unlucky. Sad

It's a (potentionally) cheap way to play Famicom games on an NES.

I have one of these converters, and for practical use actually it holds the PCB so tightly that it would kinda suck if you have a bunch of FC carts you want to try.

Main reason I wanted one is so I'll have something when I (eventually, someday) develop my own Famicom cartridge.

They're really great for making total conversions!  By that I mean putting a famicom game inside a nes cartridge and then making a label.  For famicom games that are unreproducable, this is a great way to make them up as nes games.

The really good thing about them is that they have the copy protection chip (CIC) so they will work in any NES with no modification.  Unfortunately, they're hard to use in a front loader.  Also, some famicom carts don't fit on them without shaving off some of the edge of the black plastic part of the converter  (yes, you can flip the black part so that the tabs aren't in the way, but some cartridges still don't fit).  As Memblers said, they also do grip tightly.  They were never meant to be a daily use item, and it seems like it could wear the contacts on your famicom games to use it constantly.  It does seem to get a little looser over time, but it's still a tight fit.

If you really do want to use it as your main converter in a front loader, I suggest you sacrifice a game genie's "handle".  Just screw it into the black plastic's screw holes.  It's still sometimes difficult to get into the toaster nes easily, but it comes out easily.

How complicated would it be to make a converter like these?  There are mass 72->60 pin converters out there (probably due to Famiclones) so why not a mass production of the opposite?

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who'd buy a ton of them.

Yes, but it's huge numbers that makes the price cheap....  Smiley  If you had the capital, I'm sure you could do it!
