Refurbishing My NES
14. Nov 2006 at 18:00

Afte disabling the lockout chip, (see topic) I bought a new 72 pin connector & some AV cables.  Now my NES works perfectly.

Now I just need to finish the exterior.  There's a nasty sticker residue & some yellow (dis?)coloration that I've been meaning to get rid of.  Does Goo Gone, or whatever it is, fix that?

The yellow discoloration most likely is just the aging of the plastic and can't be removed by cleaning. Rubbing alcohol will most likely remove the sticker residue.

That's too bad; I removed a smaller round sticker cleanly off of it & the plastic is pristine right under there.

So rubbing alcohol on the residue?  Anything else?

You could try using whatever it is you're using to get rid of sticker res, marker, etc. on the yellowing.  If you got it second hand, it could be caked on dust, nicotine residue, etc.  Don't expect it to work, just give it a whirl and think of it as a bonus if it does come clean Smiley

Okay, the rest of the sticker is all off, but the yellow is still there. ...
I hope it's not from smoking; what will the neighbors think? ...

Have you tried your luck with a Mr. Clean magic eraser?  Thats the first thing I pick up when I get a new console in, works better than anything else I've tried.  If its from smoking, I bet it will make a difference.  If its from natural yellowing from cheap plastic, you would probably be better off taking it apart and painting it with some Krylon fusion.  Nothing seems to help the yellowing of NES and especially SNES systems.

I wonder what a bath/soak would do for a yellow case. I have an old broken one I got in a lot I think I'll set up a bucket and find out. Any recommendations? I know a friend tried "Marine Clean" but it just made the plastic really brittle. Bleach seems obvious but it might make my system albino -- which wouldn't be uncool, just not "back to normal."

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.
