isnt every game an RPG really?

I mean youre playing the role of someone or something...in pretty much every game.
Along the way you can collect power up items that make you stronger or improve your abilities (i.e Super Mario Bros or Mega Man...etc)

Look at River City Ransom...You go around and beat up thugs, steal their money so you can buy food or books to read to make you stronger or faster and you aquire different weapons along the way. Seems to me that this game (and many others) have those "RPG" elements.

Whatev's...i guess my favorite "true" RPG is Final Fantasy.

What sets apart classic tabletop Dungeons and Dragons from just sitting in a room playing make-believe with your lame friends is the character sheet. The character sheet (now more than ever in 3rd edition) is based around your stat scores. Six little dicechucks that govern the life path of your grunt. The ability score is something that's nearly universal across all tabletop RPG's. Games that lack it lack the proper depth of character to really let you simulate a role. Call it an RSG if you want, Role Simulation Game...but you don't simulate games, you play them.

The top three things that classify an electronic RPG to me are nearly universal among games that have RPG status:

Stat scores that directly impact your character(s) actions. "Link has a quantity of hearts" is not proper justification.

A vast, varied inventory that revolves around choice, not necessity. Unfortunately DW1 is pretty much on the same level as Zelda 1 with this, but the DW series got better. A raft to unlock a level is novel, but the difficulty of enemies is the classic barrier to entry: an "open" world with skill barriers, not physical ones.

Some aspect of magic (or magic-like special abilities), and not just a "Magic Ring." Spells/feats that you or a character in your employ can strategically cast/execute. Again, to specify, "I can press both A+B together to do a SPECIAL attack!" is not a feat. This is barely a game mechanic.

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.

I've never been a RPG fan either NGD.  There are a few RPGs I enjoyed for various systems, like Alundra, Atelier Iris, and Super Mario RPG.  The only RPG I enjoyed for NES is Earth Bound.

I'd definitely say Final Fantasy 1 is my favourite RPG on the NES. The Dragon Warrior series is fantastic and Ultima:Quest of the Avatar is neat too, but I think FF has them beat. Final Fantasy was Square's last ditch effort to make an amazing game and look at where it took them. The amazing line of games that this one started is phenominal, and as a series it is one of the top 5 ever created. I think it was actually the first game of its time to have animated characters in battle. Final Fantasy 1 is better than most RPG's designed now.

For NES, my favorites are Destiny of an Emperor, Dragon Warrior IV, Dragon Warrior II and Final Fantasy.  Those are some superior titles in my book.

The Bard's Tale is a cool one also, takes some time but still cool. I have a proto of it, i'll review some stuff pretty soon, it seems to have differences.
