The GPS code is solved!
25. Feb 2007 at 12:08

Ok, now i know the origin and story behind the GPS games Cheesy
I talked to a guy from Spain who sold some GPS game and i  thought i'd ask him if he knew what the GPS games were. And luckily he did Smiley

The GPS games were released at the end of the NES era. For Spaco (spanish importer of Nintendo stuff) to get a game with ESP code they had to order atleast 5000 copies of one game. Since it was the end of the NES era and sales were going slow it would be very hard to sell 5000 copies of an old NES game, or new for that matter. So Nintendo made a universal code for the games, you guessed it, the GPS code. This is why GPS games have been found in several of countries.

Instead of printing local languages on the box and manual they printed all in english. Then the different importers would just include a manual with their language in additional to the english one. Thats why i.e my copy of Mario & Yoshi GPS have both a fully english manual and a french/dutch manual. Stickers on back of the box was also applied sometimes. Doesnt look too good, but it was cost efficient.

So in short terms, the GPS code was a universal code that was released at the end of the NES era. What GPS stands for is still a mystery tho.

Remember me as the guy who solved the GPS mystery! LOL Wink But good to finaly know what it is Smiley

You didn't only solved the gps mystery, but also another!!

If your story is correct then i now how many copies of rodland there where released WORLDWIDE!

Namely:5000

Many information, also on this site clame that sales curve had a minimum ammount of copies released of rodland

-the rodland games only come with the nes-r8-esp code
-the where released in 1993 the end of the nes period
-there where only copies found in Holland Spain and Italy

So i think we can say that rodland only had 5000 copies made,in 1993 its 2007,

So thats wy its so rare today, its a gues howmany are still left, but can't be many

Hehe actually i thought about the numbers of Rodland Smiley If the minium order for a game to get ESP code was 5000 copies it would mean that theres atleast 5000 copies of Rodland with ESP code Smiley I guess this number variated from country to country, but there is for sure thousands of Rodland copies made.

Yep,but there are so few,i think that copies not sold at the end of the nes period, not only rodland, but also other games, where destroyed.
It has to be,the only explanation for there rarity status

Its possible, but i dont think they destroyed them. That would be a total waste of money. I think they just sold them cheap at the end. The reason why i think Rodland is so rare is because online auctions in Spain, Italy and Holland arent that big, so the people who own Rodland got them in the attic or basement.

Just keep in mind the M82 and other demo units were completely different than game stock sold in stores.  To this day, Nintendo (and most other companies) require stores to destroy all old store fixtures and advertisements (posters, old promotional material, etc).  In the US, at least in retain chains, if a product such as a certain game doesn't sell, the item is usually marked down a few times until it reaches bare bottom prices.  Then, if it still sits around not selling at next to nothing, the store can gather up all the unsold quantities of that item and destroy them.    Over two years after the dreamcast died, the store I used to work at still had tons of sports games in stock for it.  The games finally were marked down to around .50$ before we got rid of them all but they still sold.

Ye, its true that M-82 and other various demo units were destroyed. The same with NWC carts. But these arent retail stuff like limbofunk mentioned. Nintendo didnt want these items to be in the hands of private people so they destroyed them Sad

Games however are retail stuff which is suppose to be sold to the public. Some games are shipped back to the distributer tho, depends on what kinda deal the stores have. But its much cheaper and better to sell the games for even $1 than to ship them back (which cost money) and then destroy them. It probly happends with some games, but in most cases they drop the price first. Good for us consumers Smiley
