CopyNES or alternative question
07. May 2007 at 15:10

Hi folks,

I have a proto of a released North American game that differs slightly (mostly text) from the final version and I was looking to dump the ROM for myself just incase the eproms die on me I could just flash the game back on.  I have been trying to get my hands on a CopyNES for a while but have had no luck.  Anyone know where I could buy one without going through Kevin directly?  I have had no luck getting in touch with him and I know that there aren't many more available.  If not, does anyone know of an alternative dumping device I would be able to purchase?  This would be a huge help as I invested a decent chunk of change for this game and would hate to see it go to waste.  Thanks guys!

-Mark

I have been wanting a copyNES also.  I contacted kevtris from his site and from nesdev and he never responeded to either.  I wanted to get one before they were gone also.   Undecided

Looks like they may all be gone.  I started an account over at the NESdev boards to see if I could get one and apparently they don't think too highly of collectors over there. Instead of being told where I could get one I just got an irate message about there not being any left and how I should dump a game I paid for and decrease its value just because someone else wants to play it  Undecided

I never will understand that, seems so odd to me.

They seem to be generalizing "collectors."

Any idea what the EPROM codes are?
Are the windows on the EPROMs covered? (if not, you might want to put some tape over them)
Are the EPROMs soldered in, or in a socket (most likely soldered.  They probably wouldnt fit if it was in a socket).

If they were socketed, and the EPRIM was supported by the programmer software,  you could take them out and read them in a EPROM programmer.   If they were soldered, you could de-solder them (risky. More like insane).

I own a CopyNES, but I've never even tried it yet.  It requires a Parallel port, and my laptop doesnt have one.  If I ever get a parallel port PCMCIA card,  I might be able to help.
There's no point in me sending you my CopyNES to try out,  shipping would be insane.

Another thingy is that it doesn't always work perfect with Windows XP, for my pc it didn't work but for jajaja's it did. Sounds weird, i know, but Kevin didn't have a direct answer for this problem i had, it works fine with Windows '98.

Perhaps if you find somebody that you trust enough who knows how to dump games, you could send it to them temporarily and have them dump it for you.

You don't *have* to desolder the chips, imo that would be an insane thing to do...

I've built this thing to dump my protos with my eprom burner/reader

Wow!  That thing looks pretty cool.  Is using a set up like that extremely difficult for someone without a background in dumping/programing?  If not, would you be interested in making another to sell?

Well it's a bitch to use but it works, it doesn't require a lot of skill to make, it's just a CLIFF (it's the brand) connector with a lot of wires attached... i'm sure any electronics shop would be able to get one for you....

Don't expect a response from kevtris.  He know's his stuff when it comes to the NES, but he's not exactly polite.   If he doesen't have any left to sell, he's probably not going to contact you.l
