They vary in size.

I have hundreds of sketches and most of those are 8x10 sheets of paper or larger. I don't think I have a final cover any smaller than say 10x14 inches but my largest is too big for any wall in my house. Its for a PC game called the 11hour (sequel to the game 7th guest) and its roughly 5ft wide by 9ft long. I had to have it crated and shipped to a wherehouse and then picked it up there.

I think heavy barrel is one of the larger ones I'd have to dig it back out to get the exact measurements.

Here is the Heavy Barrel with a SMB/DH for size. The painted area is about 17X22 inches but there is a boarder all the way around. Its also attached to a thicker sheet which is larger all the way around. A plastic sheet has been taped to the top to the non-painted area as protection (from the artist not me) but this can be removed with no damage.

These are some of the most interesting items I have seen videogame-wise.  Thank you so much for sharing...I really appreciate it, as I am sure many others do!

Its hard to tell sometimes if people are 'into' what you present. Glad to hear you enjoy looking at them. If there are any from the slide show you would like to see better shots of let me know.

I would certainly love to see a better picture of the Zombies Ate My Neighbors one...do you have the drawings for the other box or just this variant?

I was curious to know you opinion on something: do you think that Princess Tomato had any concept drawings for cover art, or do you think they just snapped a picture of clay models?  I know it's a bit off topic, and somewhat random, but it just seems interesting that they didn't go the same route via a drawing.  It would be neat if I knew someone that sculped well...that is one of my favorite games and I would love to have little replicas made of the characters on the box.

Here is a better Zombies picture sorry I don't have the other Zombies. I prefer this one but yeah it would nice to have them both.

...

I would guess that they used models for the PT box. Not every box was from a painting. Having the actual models would be very cool and I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult for a gifted artist to reproduce a set for you.

Hear hear Smiley I love this game too, but feel embarrassed to admit it! There's really no difficulty to it, but at least it's beatable without some sort of walkthrough/hint book unlike the kemco/seika first-person adventures of the same kind. Sure, throw that spider at the ghost, that will get rid of it...

I'm assuming some of the cartoon art included within the game and manual was probably passed along as a concept for the cover, but deemed two "2-dimensional." At this point in the NES's lifespan (1991) production was at a fever pitch and NES's market share was immense, in order to stand out the developers probably felt they needed to go out on a limb and make something very different for the art. So they went all "gumby" on it. Certainly appealed to the target market as well, the same age group.

"He's here...and he will be sure to stay...Gumby!"

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.

Its  cool to see the differences between the artist concept and the final result.

I have a question about the concept art.  In some cases it looks less crisp than the final box art (look at the Double Dragon writing).

Is this because there was some additional involvement in setting up the printing dies, etc..  or is because this concept was simply that, a concept, which the video game company themselves modified/recreated/adapted into whatever final output format and look they wanted.

I guess the reason I am asking is because I dont know the level of technology they had in the late 80s as far as layout and printing are concerned.

I know that for Sudoku, my wife painted the initial artwork on some sort of material (I dont think its called a canvas when its a watercolor painting) that would fit in our flatbed scanner, and then I used photoshop to add the fonts, etc...  But since my results involved a printer instead of a printing press, I'm sure there's differences.

It has to do with it being part of the thinking process. They put it on paper to get an idea what it will look like but yeah they are very rough compared to the finals.
