What is the best NES hardware clone?
12. Jun 2007 at 19:21

A few months ago I really wanted to buy a Famicom, and not so much an NES.  Right now, I'm not really sure what I want, but I'm looking at a lot of options, and one of those is NES hardware clones and Famicom hardware clones.  Simply put, all I want to know is out of all the different hardware clones, which is the best -- which is the highest quality, the most compatible, etc., etc.

Also, how legal are NES/Famicom hardware clones anymore...I thought I heard something about a patent expiring or something...?  I'm not too sure about that...

Also, and finally, is there any list I can find on the Internet of all the different NES and Famicom clones, or at least of all the major ones?  Maybe people can list them here for me?

All help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

By no means have I had a chance to try every famiclone out there, but I do have experience with the Messiah NEX and the Yobo.

I hate the NEX I think it's stupid.  It has bad compatibility problems and I just don't like it.  I hear good things from it from casual gamers who suddenly decided to "go retro".  However from people like me or anybody else on this message board who plays NES all the time I think it sucks.  It's good for the casual gamers.  Bad for the hardcore retro guys.

I think the Yobo is pretty good, although I've noticed some flaws.  Overall I like it very much, and haven't noticed any compatibility problems yet.  I've noticed some flaws in the sound emulation, such as the jumping and powerup sounds in Super Mario Bros sound a little off.  And due to the shape of the thing, you can't put a game genie into it (the plastics touch and you physically can't insert it into the console).

The only one I've had any experience with is the Yobo.  It worked great, but is made pretty cheaply.  When you pull a game out, you can feel how flimsy the plastic is.  It has a few compatibility problems.  It won't play Maniac Mansion and I think I recall it not working for one of the Castlevanias.

There is a comparison guide here: http://www.runjumpshoot.com/content/11/1/NES-Console-Buyer's-Guide.html

I know little of Famiclones, but I have lots of NES clones. the best is the Famicom twin by yobo (it is not a famicom). It plays NES and SNES. Only drawback....uses a SNES pad, so you cannot play any light gun games. About 45-70 on ebay.

I don't think any clone will play Castlevania III...?

No, none of the clones can play Castlevania III, along with a few other games.

Well, it seems that my best option would still be to opt for the original hardware.  Although it may not be the most reliable (in terms of it age) it is by far the most compatible.

Thanks for all the help, everyone, and for the link to that excellent article, mewithoutYou52.  Now I just need to know the best place to buy an NES...

Ah, but I can't do that, for lack of a composite video output.  I'm already sacrificing video quality with composite cables, so RF would kill me.

I know the NES redesign can be modded to support composite video output, but I don't want to go that route, so I'm stick to the original hardware.

The best Famicom clones are the various devices produced by Sharp.
