What to think?
20. Jun 2007 at 23:13

I did a random search for completed listings on ebay for nes and sorted them by highest price first.  I was kind of just searching for what high end single games have been bringing lately.  I was saddened to discover that most of the high end single games that have sold recently are all reproductions...

http://cgi.ebay.com/NINTENDO-NES-SCARABEUS-HTF-FREE-SHIPPING-WOW_W0QQitemZ170118...
http://cgi.ebay.com/NINTENDO-NES-FINAL-FANTASY-II-2-HTF-FREE-SHIPPING-WOW_W0QQit...

http://cgi.ebay.com/NINTENDO-NES-CALIFORNIA-RAISINS-HTF-FREE-SHIPPING-WOW_W0QQit...

Makes me question my collecting in general.  If the most valuable items for the system I'm collecting are just items that people can easily make more of and have no boundries of how many can exist than whats the point.  These are games that hold no collecting value in my mind and they are worth 10x-20x the value of even rare/rarer carts like pro sport hockey, alfred chicken and gemfire.

I realize that people are dumb and blah blah blah, my collecting also has more of a purpose and goal than just the monetary value of my collection but this just made me raise an eyebrow today.  If items like these are worth big money (if even only to an idiot) and Mickey's adventure in numberland is worth $10 although a bitch to find.....why am I hunting so hard for the Numberland cart.

You're hunting so hard for that numberland cart because value isn't the reason you collect.

Many of us here could cash out and make thousands.  but the people who's collections are worth thousands don't collect for monetary value.

Very true.  In the end it won't change how or what I collect, and it won't change my collection goals.  All in all this was probably just my rant for the day and I will dismiss it tomarrow.  But doesn't it irk you just a little?

It used to urk me greatly at first, but now that I have become a bit more seasoned of a collector I have got to a point where I don't care nearly as much.  I do still find it annoying that people don't do any research at all before dropping 100-150 for a repro they could get for 30.  I just chalk it up to n00bness and move on.  Even though that Bmw guy who won that one Cali Raisins has been around as a seller for a while and should know better in theory.

it is sad.  "retro" video games are so popular now, it makes me want to give up entirely on collecting

Couldnt a person send a message on ebay to the people who won (or bid) on those games and include a link to the 2 main repro sites on the web so they can see where they should be getting them.

Indeed you can.  In fact I used to do it all the time cause I hated repros so much that were sold like that.  But I gave that up long ago.  It would be more efficient to contact ebay and tell them that the seller keeps selling them and send the links to several of the ones he has sold.  His account would likely get suspended.

well unless the tools that pay a arm and a leg for the repos find another tool to sell it to they will find out they got took to the cleaners.. i dont know any serious nes collector who seriously goes after repo carts  so if someone is dumb enough to buy a repo for hundreds thats to bad for them... when the make it to a site like this or others they will find out they got hosed

I never saw a problem with people who resell repros on eBay, as long as it isn't described as a prototype.

Oh, it doesn't bother me that people sell them or that people buy them.  What does bother me is that these games bring such a premium and people are willing to pay it.  Its just sad that a reproduction cart has a higher market value than every single nes cart ever released in the US except for five maybe six games.

maybe I'm looking at this wrong.  maybe I should ebay trade my 6-7 repros I have and buy a stadium events.  Hell if they are going to bring $100-$150 I'd get pretty close.

Actually when I look at it that way, it seems even worse.  "I'll trade you my 7 reproduction carts for a stadium events cart."  According to ebay values thats a fair trade.

Everyone ponder that one for a while and let me know how it sits with you.
