I agree that finding NES games in the wild is a lot harder nowadays. I think it has a lot to do with ebay. Now, people see games NES games on eBay, and they think all NES games are worth a lot of money. It's hard to find any games around here now, and when I do the people want ridiculous amounts of money for them.
I think you pretty much nailed it. Too many idiots trying to get rich quick by selling shitty commons like SMB/Duck Hunt and such.
It's not that people are actually collecting them, IMO, but rather people who just want to make a quick buck.
I can't even tell you how many times I've overheard people saying to their friend/significant other/parents/etc at thrift stores and flea markets, "I'mma make a killing off these on eBay! har har har!"
And you look in their hands, and all they have is a few games worth like a couple bucks at most total.
