Silver battery back up caution labels??
29. Aug 2007 at 17:38

Hey all. Was just sorting through a bunch of games I'm preparing to sell when I noticed the Wizardry cart has a silver caution label instead of the standard gold label that is on games that contain a battery. Sure enough, I checked my own Wizardry cart and it has the standard gold label.

The carts appear identical with the same ID number. The only difference is the production number on the caution label itself, gold is plant 20 and silver is plant 21.

This probably isn't horribly uncommon but I didn't see a topic here or even a mention of this variation in NGD's comprehensive game list. I pretty sure this is the first time I've noticed a silver caution label. Any other info on this?

Suppose I should have done that in the first place, didn't think it was anything terribly uncommon though.

Takes a lot longer to get a reply around here than it did years back. Smiley

Weird.  I have never seen one of those before.  Where did you find it?

Could it be sun fadding?  The label looks kinda cracky (not sure if that is a word)

It definitely doesn't look like sun fading to me. I think the cracky-ness you're referring to is just my camera flash picking up minute scratches on the surface of the label. Also, if it were sunfade, I think the red text on the label itself would be nearly gone and it appears just as vibrant as on the gold label.

It came as part of a small lot of games I got off eBay some time back from a seller here in the US and didn't get around to sorting through.

Has anyone ever seen any game with a silver caution label?

I'm pretty sure I've seen one before, although I havent recorded any in my database.
I keep track of Tengen and other unlicensed "back" variants because you cant swap those backs (one screw is under the label).  I've never tried tracking or collecting back variants for regular games.   However, since I have started collecting "Rev A" variants, I may change my policy. Smiley

I'll go through and check mine later.   Maybe take a look at the imprinted number in the top left of the back label.  That is the production facility code.  If they have different codes, the carts were produced in different locations (probably meaning a different production run).

Me and braveheart figured it out last night (mostly braveheart, but I was talking to him).  Someone just cleaned the back of the cart and it turned the label.  Erik tried it last night on one of his spare carts with a gold label.  He used goo gone and mr clean magic eraser and said the gold came right off and looked exactly like the one pictured above.  Mystery solved Cool

Wow!  Good catch on that one.  But, I suppose, now there's no way to tell if there was every a legitimate silver label made (probably there wasn't).  But still good so no one falls for it on Ebay or something.

Thanks  Smiley

That is interesting and it does make sense as there was obviously a name removed from the back of the cart at one time or another. (as can be seen in the pic)

Can he supply a picture of his results? I'm really interested in seeing what he got. I pulled out a spare dungeon magic cart and spent some time rubbing it with goo gone/cloth as well as a magic eraser (standard type) and the gold didn't come off even in the slightest, let alone right away. The biggest change was the sticker became slightly frayed around the edges where the cleaner worked itself into the sticker residue. Was he using goo gone ON the magic eraser??

Also, I'd like to know what game it was as there may be slight variations to the gold label itself. Some possibly have an additional layer of gloss or some such thing that would prevent the gold from coming off and would explain why my attempts on dungeon magic didn't have any results.

Hopefully I'll be able to verify it myself if worse comes to worse I'll try it on my Wizardry cart.

He sprayed Goo Gone on the label and then used the eraser on it.  I will see if he can get a pic next time we talk.

Well I just let a spare canadian Dragon Warrior cart soak up some goo gone for a bit and then scrubbed the HELL out of it and yes indeed the gold did come off. However, the results were less than outstanding so I'm not quite ready to rule out the possibility of legitimate silver caution labels.

Theres a couple main reasons:
1) the edges seem nearly impossible to scrub without fraying the label by removing small portions of the sticker residue, at least with what I'm using (regular old squeeze bottle goo gone and a fairly old magic eraser)
2) The text did begin to wear off in places
3) When comparing the two the one I scrubbed has a different shine to it, looks TOO shiny if you ask me.

I took some pictures of the Dragon Warrior cart I scrubbed as well as a better quality shot of the label on the Wizardry cart itself. And a side by side of the two as well. They're pretty big so I'm moving them to the next post. You can see the amount of "silver" is pretty different. I really don't know though, check the pictures and let me know what you guys think.

So are we just passing this off then? I'm not one to care much about label variations but I guess I'll be holding on to the Wizardry cart since I'm not convinced it's illegitimate nor legitimate.

Unless we can find more than 1 of these then I am chalking it up as cleaning fluid causing it.  Time will tell I guess.
