Messiah Generation NEX Alternatives?
26. Jan 2008 at 00:30

I want a somewhat sleek looking system with wireless controllers that I can keep in a room with my flat panel hanging on the wall.  The Generation NEX seems to fit that description, but I have read mixed reviews.  Are there any wireless alternatives to the Generation NEX and, if not, what are everyone's opinions of that system?

Not really.  The alternative is the Akklaim wireless from 15 years ago, it's IR and doesn't work well.

I have the Messiah controllers and can't recommend them strongly enough.  As for the console (NEX), enjoy some authenticity and get a real top-loader, or save some money and get a Yobo.

From everybody I have talked to abou the Generation NEX said it was a piece of crap. I agree that you should go with a Top Loader NES. If you wanted to save some money I also agree with Johnny about getting a YoBo. I had a YoBo it lasted me a good while but then broke and I must say its purple (not my favorite color lol) and it looks really cheap (cause it is) hope this helps.

I've had a Yobo for a few years and it still works great.  Although these days it's only for when games won't boot up on the ol' toaster.

Any and all of the cheap knock off consoles ARE going to have compatibility issuses period.  They might be small, while others deem the games unplayable.  Spend the 60-75 and buy a real top loader.  You get what you pay for and that is why the yobo and stuff is such crap.

I already have both an original toaster and a toploader, but I don't use the toploader very much since it only has an RF connection.  Do the Messiah wireless controllers have a receiver that works with the original NES consoles, or only with the Messiah itself?

They do work with the original NES.  They have a dongle (I believe they now sell seperately, although they dropped the price on the controllers so there's no price difference) that will receive the signal.

If you'd rather use your top loader, there's one sexy a/v mod for the top loader.

I would love to use my toploader, but I'm not comfortable modding it myself.  Do you know anyone reputable who would be willing to mod it for a small fee?

I know Shadowhacker from NA has done it for a few people but he lives in Canada so shipping would cost a bit more.  I think Bootgod would help you out and is a very trustworthy guy.

I prefer the front-loader NES myself, but I just love the original feel of everything.  I'm too nostalgic for my own good, though.

Cleaning the system whenever it gets unresponsive has always kept it working, for me.

I really want to get some playmessiah controllers, but I've got plenty of functioning, albeit bizarre NES controllers already.  Besides, it's hard to get anyone besides my wife to play oldschool games with me, so the fourscore is out of the question.

And I wouldn't bother with the modded system.  I'd just get a short RF/coaxial patch cable with an RF-to-A/V convertor.  Should be about as effective.

Has anyone tried the Retro Duo?
It seems to be much better than any other clone available as it is able to play Castlevania 3 and it seems that it runs properly most SNES games including Mario RPG and StarFox.
It's a shame it doesn't have an extra Famicom slot though, otherwise, it could have been the perfect clone!
