Favorite NES soundtracks/composers?

So what are your favorite NES soundtracks? Who are your favorite NES composers?

I love Dave's theme from Maniac Mansion, although I'm not sure who was responsible for it. (Has anyone else noticed that The Adventures of Rad Gravity sounds a lot like it had someone from the Maniac Mansion soundtrack working on it???)

The title screen music to Bee 52 is also pretty cool, despite the fact that usually I'm not a fan of the Codemasters sound.

As to composers in general, I'm a big fan of Kazuo Sawa. He did the River City Ransom/Nintendo World Cup franchise music, and also Battle of Olympus.

Lately I've been getting into Miyamo Shant, mostly due to his stuff on Guardian Legend and Gyruss. Smiley

How about you guys?

I don't know the names of any of the composers, but I'm actually a big fan of some of the the Mega Man music.  Especially Mega Man 2's Flash Man theme.

'course I like techno.

And just for sheer "legendary theme" status, I love the Legend of Zelda theme.  The start of a dynasty, in my opinion.

One of my favorites is 8 Eyes.  Most people think, what?  But if you consider the time and artistry that went into that, you'd think again.  The songs are incredibly fitting for each country, not to mention not at all stereotypical.  That's quite a feat.  In addition, it's some of the most complex sound programming on the NES and from a famous soundman to boot.

Masaharu Iwata could work the NES syth like no one's business. His Might & Magic, Over Horizon, and Conquest of the Crystal Palace soundtracks are amazing.

Eiji Miyabi (aka Neon Kidd) of Culture Brain fame did some really excellent soundtracks with The Magic of Scheherazade and the Hiryu No Ken series.

Naoki Kodaka of Sunsoft's work is outstanding, as well, including Batman, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, and Super Spy Hunter.

Tim Follin's Solstice, Sky Shark, and Silver Surfer soundtracks are all top-notch.

Other honorable mentions:

Kyouhei Sada (Contra, Abadox)

Miki Higashino (Life Force)

David Wise (All of Rare's games)

Miyamo Shant (Guardian Legend, Zanac)

Don't forget Gremlins 2 for the former, and Target: Renegade for the latter! Those soundtracks are friggin' sweet.

If you need some good ol' funk, check out The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Great tunes!

I've always been partial to the music from Duck Tales.  The game music, mind you, not the cartoon.  Though that's awesome, too.

I also LOVE the "Drivin Music" from Rad Racer.  The first track that plays when you press down on the d-Pad.  I believe it was done by the same guy who did the Final Fantasy soundtrack (Rad Racer is a Square game, after all).

The two songs I get stuck in my head almost everyday and almost 20 years later is the theme from Bubble Booble and Rescue: Escape From The Embassy.

Great tracks.

I love some of the European chaps, what with their arp-heavy c64 influences and what not-

Tim Follin (Silver Surfer, Treasure Master, Solstice...)
Geoff Follin (Silver Surfer, Wolverine...)
Alberto Gonzalez (Asterix, Smurfs...)
Jeroen Tel (Overlord...)
Neil Baldwin (Magician, HeroQuest, James Bond Jr... )

All the sunsoft soundtracks with DPCM bass are pretty awesome and fat sounding too-
Journey to Silius,
Batman Return of the Joker,
Gimmick!,
Gremlins 2...

I could probably go on and on, the sound of the NES is one of my favorite aspects and chiptune music in general makes up the bulk of my interest in all this silly 'retro stuff'.  Wink

Kazunaka Yamane's Double Dragon II score is one of the NES's best.
The opening theme, the battle against the Shadow Boss, and the beautiful ending theme are all excellent in particular. It remains one of my favorite 8-bit scores to this day.

Technos as a whole put out some really great music on the NES.
My other favorite from them would be the excellent soundtrack to
Super Spike V'Ball. Some very catchy tunes in that one and a killer ending theme.

Mega Man 2-5, Double Dragon series, Ninja Gaiden series, Solstice, Metroid.

Can't think of any others at the moment, although there are plenty.
