Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers versions?
15. May 2008 at 17:24

Howdy folks.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was the first NES game I ever beat.  I thought I remembered it well, even though I have not played it since 1993.

However, last night I decided to play it on NesterDC on my Dreamcast and some things seemed different.

Particularly, the final fight with Fat Cat seemed more difficult.  For those who have not played the game, Fat Cat is sitting behind a desk with a cigar, flicking ashes down on the player who is trying to hit him with a red ball.

I distinctly recall from my youth the ash only falling in one distinct pattern and being able to find a safe spot just next to where the ball is when you enter the room.  One of the FAQs on GameFAQs seems to support this idea.

However, other FAQs and my last-night playing experience seem to contradict this, with Fat Cat's ashes falling in any of several distinct patterns.

Are there two versions of the game?  Am I just remembering it wrong?  I do not still have access to the cart I played way back then.

Thanks!

Good question.  It's been a long time since I played it but, (as a kid at least) I found the game to be especially difficult.  It seemed to me that the mechanics of the game (the physics) were a little messed up - jumps didn't land where you thought they should, etc.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering it, as well.

It is certainly possible that the game was revised in general to make it more difficult.  Maybe that's why some of my friends wondered what the heck I was talking about when I said that I couldn't beat C & D.

Anybody know if there is a -1 revision of the game?

The one and only time I played this game was when a friend and myself rented it (Many years ago). We were able to easily beat it in a night.
I wonder if there are a couple variations?

I have definitely had situations in which I beat a boss really easily but on a replay, the boss used some move that he hadn't before which made him harder to beat. I can't think of any specific examples right now, but even something like that could've been what happened.

Maybe the path you take effects the difficulty of the final boss?
