SMB - Lost Levels
26. May 2008 at 21:27

Hey guys,
This is my first post on this forum. I am a pretty avid collector. I just started getting back into it after being out of the scene for a few years.
Anyways, I am wondering what my options are for getting SMB 2 – The Lost Levels? I was hoping it is available on an NES or Famicom pirated cart. I really want to play it off a cart and not an emulator, the wii, or the SNES version.
If it is on a pirated Cart, finding it would be the next question…

Thanks.

It occasionally pops up on pirate cartridges, but it strangely seems a lot harder to find on them than you'd think, whereas games like Sky Destroyer and The Goonies (although AWESOME), are there all the time.  But there's awesome hope for you.  Go here.  Leon is an awesome guy, go to the bottom and you'll find SMB2 Japanese version.  Nice price and really cool game.  My copy had a few crashing issues now and then, but it seemed with some quick cleaning it was fine after that.

Awesome! Just what i was looking for.
Any other good playable repo games you'd recommend? If i am going to get one, might as well get two...
Thanks a lot.

The Japanese Final Fantasy games are a must, as well as stuff in PAL you might not have such as Over Horizon.  It's cool playing some of the production games like Robocop vs. Terminator as well.  California Raisins is an interesting title too.

Hmmm, I'm actually not sure it appears on any Supervision cartridges.  I borrowed a Vietnamese pirate off of my father's friend a long time ago and it was on there, but it seems to be pretty rare to see it on a pirate for some strange reason.  I suppose the idea that it was too hard for anyone other than the Japanese rang true even in piracy heaven.  And the Super Mario cart you mention seems to be pretty hard to find.  For the price, better off just getting the repo.

Pirated SMB2j is very rare for the NES. It's not as rare for the Famicom, if you don't mind converting the pins. They pop up pretty regularly on eBay. I think there's one on eBay right now, but its overpriced at around $60. Super Mario Family is very rare and should cost more than a repro -- but SMFamily has about 10 games on it.

I think there are a couple different versions of the Family. I've got a copy with these:

New Super Mario “4” (Rock & Ball Mario) [Armadillo hack w. Mario]; Super Mario 3 (Flying Racoon); Super Mario 2 (American Version); Super Mario 2 (Japanese Version); Baby Mario; Doctor Mario; Super Mario; Mario Bros; Mickey Mouse; Bowling.

It was made in 1992, so I'm assuming the Armadillo hack was "new" at that time. I've never understood how Mickey Mouse and Bowling fit in.

You can also play it on the Super NES as part of Super Mario All-Stars. Damn tough game, too.
