R.C. Pro Am, garbled gfx, Castlevania 1, crash?
20. Feb 2009 at 04:04

I've cleaned these two games several times, with what I believe to be an effective cleaning method (brasso + half water/half rubbing alcohol). With that method I've seen no problems with all my other games, but these two games keep having problems.

I've heard Castlevania 1 was released initially with a bug that made it crash intermittently. I usually see this crash in the Grim Reaper level.

I haven't heard anything about R.C. Pro Am, it never seems to crash but every so often the graphics get messed up.

Anyone else have these games or heard about problems with them?

I bet your not playing on a real NES are you?  Prob an after market one like yobo or something.  That is pretty typically on the after market ones.  If it is on a real NES, you may need a new pin connector.

I do have a real NES, I have installed a brand new 72 pin connector in the system. It is only these two games which continue to have problems. I have heard on other boards that Castlevania 1 was released initially with a bug which caused it to crash intermittently. I am told that this version had a "0" written on the PRG chip on the game's circuit board. I have verified this is the case.   I have not heard anything about R.C. Pro Am having problems, so I am at a loss to understand why my copy continues to have trouble.

What is your preferred cleaning method? Perhaps brasso has ruined the R.C. Pro Am cart? (yes, I remove the residue, it is clean) The connectors don't appear damaged, they are shiny and clean.

I just wanted to report, I finally got R.C. Pro Am clean enough that it appears to be able to run for extended periods of time without ever getting garbled up. I cleaned this cartridge about 15 or 20 times, I had been starting to lose hope that connection was the issue with it.

I did one subtle thing different when cleaning the connectors this time---I rubbed lengthwise, and only in one direction, along the connectors( namely off of the cartridge).  Previously I had been rubbing side to side. My guess is that though the connectors looked shiny, what I had been doing was smearing whatever microscopic dust/corrosion was there around on the connectors and never actually pulling it off. Sound plausible?

I think I may try this on Castlevania 1 now, though I have heard that the earliest released carts did have a bug which caused it to crash.

hmmm those carts must've been extremely dirty then.... 20 minutes, wow Smiley

After cleaning you could also try the blowing technique Smiley
(blow at the cartridge' connector)
