Font used for Nintendo Action Series logo
08. Apr 2009 at 06:12

Does anyone know the font that Nintendo used to create the text on the Action Series logo?

See the following link:

http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu208/dastari/ActionSeries.png

My main problems are finding a font that has a "C" that narrow and an "R" that narrow that curves down so much while still having an "S" that curls as much as that one does. So far I can't find one that fits all the criteria.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is for some NES art that I'm creating with photoshop.

I would start with Threepoints North and then change what doesn't match... or just trace the original font in illustrator or FontForge

Threepoints North

Threepoints East (might work too)

Thanks! Threepoints North actually looks just about perfect but you have to pay $30 to get it. I'm shocked that people actually sell fonts. I'm not sure it's worth it...

Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately I don't have a hi-res version of that font. However, I did find something just as good. Someone else has created a graphic showing how all of the letters should look. Please go here:

Can you trace that and turn it into a font? Please let me know. I'd like it as soon as possible but there's no real need other than I want to finish up this part of my project so since you're doing this as charity for me then I will appreciate it whenever you can do it for me.

first of, that's another font...
...and it's a bitmap font so i don't really see the point of tracing that one.

that font is most likely from super mario world to snes for the text "MARIO START" in the beginning of every level. the glyphs are also not true to the original since it doesn't align with an 16x8 grid. if it would be placed with its original spacings i would doubt it would be suitable for other texts than "MARIO START" since multiple 'M's would not have any spacing in between and 'A' would only be complete if followed by an 'R'.

if this is for our your own private project (will not be distributed and non-commercial) then you should be in no trouble if you would copy the generated text on the webpage i linked to before, photoshop it to look like the one used for the "ACTION SERIES" logo, and using it in your project.

i might be wrong about the distribution part (you might even be able to distribute it and for commercial use legally since you don't use the original font). still i believe that it wouldn't be a problem to trace the old one from a high res photo (at least not in usa or sweden)... but i'm not lawyer it's only based on what i've read on wikipedia and in some cases parts from the swedish laws for copyright and design patents (upphovsrätt och mönsterskydd)

btw, if anyone knows theses laws feel free to correct me if i'm wrong at some parts Cheesy

anyway, if your not that picky, how about photoshoping the logo from a game to your own project?
found this one for you when i googled around a bit:

you shouldn't get into any trubbel for that Cheesy

Well the "C", "R", and "S" looked correct and that's where I've been having the trouble. None of the fonts that I have looked at have had a correct letter for all three of those except for Threepoints North. Now you're right that it looks like a pixelated version of Threepoints North. It makes me wonder if its the font used for "Thank you Mario, but our princess is in another castle" since this font is supposed to be the one for the original SMB...

I'm not sure what this means. Sure if you're creating a font you defign the spacing between letters. Please realize though that I have zero knowledge of photoshop (aside from adobe reader) and have even less about fonts. This is my first outting ever into photoshopping anything so I have no clue on a lot of the things that you are mentioning other than to fix things pixel by pixel. I already did that for the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" but it was so time consuming to do it that way that for the "action series" logo I was hoping to save the time.

Oh I suppose that I could do it that way. I was just hoping to avoid that kind of thing since I'll basically have to manually insert the letters and manually align them properly both vertically and horizontally since each letter would be like a separate object in photoshop. I was just hoping to avoid that kind of tedium since they'll never be...perfect. At times like this I wish that photoshop worked more like autocad and you could "snap" things to certain points. If you know of a way of making sure everything is aligned horizontally and of making sure that they are evenly spaced vertically then please let me know.

That's not a bad idea. The main reason why I didn't do it that way originally is that I couldn't find a high enough resolution image of the Action Series logo. I wasn't sure what games it was placed on though aside from SMB. I scanned my own copy of SMB but even at the highest resolution on my scanner, it tended to get blurry when I zoomed in high enough. When I get home I'll take a look at the game that you link to there to see how good the scan is.

Anyhow I appreciate your help and appreciate any other ideas that you can give me.

you can create guides and snap stuff to them

photoshop menu -> view -> snap
photoshop menu -> view -> snap to guides
photoshop menu -> view -> rulers

place the mouse pointer at the horizontal ruler and, press down and drag vertically to create a horizontal guide where you release (swap hor. vet. to create a guide in the other direction)

all object will now snap to that guide when you move them close enough, however it's only the bounding box for that object that will snap to the guide, so you might need to trim them before you position them.

You know, I'm almost certain Nintendo used the Helvetica family for most (if not all) of its black box text fonts.

Usually it was Helvetica Condensed Black, as is the case in the "Super Mario Bros." title caption (the real game, not your image).  I believe "Action series" used this too...

Just thought I'd chime in.
