Amateur NES collector, any tips/ helpful advice?
08. Oct 2013 at 01:35

I just started my NES collection after getting an NES, 2 controllers, Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, and a gun from a friend and that is currently what my NES collection consists of. If anyone has any helpful advice or even is willing to sell NES games (or an SNES/SNES games and an N64/N64 games) please do so. By the way I am not a complete idiot, I did my research and know how much certain games cost so please don't try to rip me off.

Oddly enough that's what I sell my NES with in my store. Anyways, to get the best stuff at the best price, you have to do research. Find out around town or other surrounding towns who's got the best prices. Ebay is the standard way I check what stuff going for. You can try Ebay but with online buying you never know what's going to happen. Flea Markets and thrift stores, but beware, these places are charging full price and none of them know what they are or what they are doing.

#1 Garage sales (hard to find) (best prices)
#2 Craigslist (easier to find) (decent prices)
#3 Thrift Stores (medium-hard to find) (variable prices)
#4 eBay (easiest) (variable but way more shoppers=more competition)
#5 Local specialty shops are overpriced and generally a waste of time unless you need the game today and can't wait to have it shipped for a much lower price from an online vendor.

That is bad advise. Specialty stores are the reason why I got into import gaming. They are basically the same as the internet. Garage sellers are people who do not value anything at all, while the speciality stores are people like us, who understands them. Without the speciality stores nobody would collect anything and the value would cease to exsist.

Ebay is cheap because nobody wants to pay for anything. They make excuses. Knowing gamers, we are not the best money making decision makers, and you will never get your money worth for anything.

Forums like these are like ebay, and some people will do risky things to prevent people from making any sales at all.
Like on ebay I brought something, but another buyer did not like what I was buying, or had something against the seller, so they made a report.

What I hate is when sellers, and buyers put their personal feelings ahead of selling.

I have personally checked out a few local pawn shops. Some pawn shops are a bit shady, but if you find some that have a feel that you are average joe gamer they seem to work with you a bit on stuff. I went to the big pawn shop we have in my city and talked with one of the long time sales guys and he told me that he has much respect for NES and I got Double Dribble and King of the Beach for $3 total. He took $1 off, which was awesome. Still he seemed to appreciate that I was into getting NES games and said if I buy them more than one at a time he would cut the price on some.
The point is if you have pawn shops that are like that maybe they can help you get some stuff at cheaper prices than online if you approach it the right way.
