First off, we need a kickass ascii logo for this letter, so if you're good at ascii drawing then please help us will ya? :) Ok, so why does NES WORLD release a newsletter when it's impossible to include pictures in it. Well the main reason is that I've found out how popular the old NES Journal fanzine, which I made back in 1995, and that people would like to see it continued. So this "letter" is basicly NES Journal, but a bit better ;) This letter will include stuff such as a "buy/sell/trade" section, which I hope will be very useful for collectors. It'll also include "e-mail answers", not at all like the mail page on NES WORLD, and ofcourse reviews along with new game hints/cheats and whatever I can come up with. Most of the stuff written in this newsletter will never be added or shown on NES WORLD, but ofcourse the new hints and cheats I find, will be added the the archive of hints and cheats on NES WORLD sometime. Again, welcome to our first newsletter and I hope you'll enjoy it. - Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________ __ __ _____ ______ __ __ |__ __| | \ | | | \ | ___| | | | | _ | | | \ | | | \ | | |__ \ \/ / |_| __| |__ | |\ | | | / | | |___ / /\ \ _ |________| |__| \__| |_____ / |______| |__| |__| |_| * NES RELATED NEWS - New version of the old NES Star Soldier game for the N64 - Shadowgate on the Nintendo64 * GAME REVIEWS - Spiritual Warfare (Wisdom Tree) - New Ghostbusters 2 (Hal Laboratory) - Tiny Toons Cartoon Workshop (Konami) * BUY/SELL/TRADE * HINTS & CHEATS * PRO. ACTION REPLAY CODES * MY NES DREAM * NEXT ISSUE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- .....NES RELATED NEWS....................................................... A sequel to the old Famicom shoot 'em up, Star Soldier, is being made by Hudson Soft. Star Soldier is a vertically scrolling shooter with lots of action going on. The new N64 version will also be a classic vertically shooter with tons of enemies and power-ups. The old Star Soldier game is over 10 years old, so it might be worth buying it to check out what Hudson has been able to come up with, however no US publisher as been announced yet. Source: ign64.com Well not only a sequel of Star Soldier is in the works. Shadowgate64: Trial of the Four Towers has just been announced by Kemco of Japan. The project will be based on the age-old NES hit which gave gamers 3D labyrinths and more magic than you can shake a stick at. Although no exact info about the game is given at this time, like the story. Since the NES classic already features 3D elements, the N64 version may continue the tradition and let you roam polygonal landscapes in a first-person perspective. Note that, Kemco of America has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the game, but we can hope for an official announcement of Shadowgate soon. Source: ign64.com ............................................................................ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- .....GAME REVIEWS........................................................... .----------------------------. | Title : Spiritual Warfare | Wisdom Tree is actually the guys from | Maker : Wisdom Tree | Color Dreams, who I guess got some sort | Year : 1992 | of blessing from above and started coding | | "bible" games. | Type : Adventure | | No. of Players : 1 | One of these games is Spiritual Warfare | Cart size : ? Megabit | which is a large adventure game. Spiritual `----------------------------ï Warfare looks a lot like something I've seen before, the Legend of Zelda to be more exact. No, this game is not a game with as great graphics and gameplay as good old Zelda, but it's getting there. I'd go as far as saying that this game is the best unlicensed adventure ever on the NES. Best of all is that games produced by Color Dreams are capable of running in ANY Nintendo unit, PAL or NTSC, so it's not only the americans who can enjoy this. The object of the game is to collect six pieces of "the Armor of God" and defeat the ultimate source of evil. Hmmf it sounds a lot like Zelda doesn't it? I mean, the six pieces could be the triforce and the source of evil is ofcourse Gannon. But don't go and buy this game if you think it's an exact copy of Zelda, because it's not. Eventhough the titlescreen shows a sword, the maincharacter, you, do not carry a sword, but instead a fruit called Pear. Instead of bombs you have some jars with exploding jam, I guess. Are you looking for a game with lots of playing hours in it? and doesn't care too much about the sound and graphics? Well if your answer is yes to both of these questions, the go buy it now. The game is similar to Zelda, where you walk around in a huge maze. Though I have to say that Zelda was easier, because of the clear graphics. Wisdom Tree choose to use black as the ground color, while Zelda is light brown. This is a sad drawback for Spiritual Warfare. Are you, like me, not the type who goes to church every sunday? Well then you might be able to refreshen your memory a bit, because Spiritual Warfare has a quiz built-in. If you see an angel on the screen, catch it and you'll enter the quiz-mode. I dont know if this is true, but some of the graphics in Spiritual Warfare looks like they were stolen from Zelda, like the raft, hearts and other nifty things. Just as in Zelda, you can find secret paths underneath bushes and stones in Spiritual Warfare. All in all, Spiritual Warfare is awesome game, for an unlicensed one that is, and I highly recommend it, eventhough you might not be "into" bibles, this game is great fun anyway. Though the most annoying thing about this game must be the sound. Man! it's grueful! But as far as I know, all Tv's today has an "instant sound-off" button so it might not be a problem. .----------------------------. | Title : New Ghostbusters 2 | Activision released Ghostbusters 2 for the | Maker : Hal Laboratory Inc | NES in 1990. It looked like something the | Year : 1992 | for an Atari 2600, no offence. Obviously | | Activision knew this, so they decided to | Type : Adventure | license their Ghostbusters license, hmmm, | No. of Players : 1 | to Hal Laboratory in 1992, with the result | Cart size : ? Megabit | of a much, much, much better Ghostbusters 2 `----------------------------ï Game. Everyone, hopefully, knows how huge a success the first Ghostbusters movie AND game was. Ofcourse Hollywood had to make a sequel, Ghostbusters 2. I personally believe that no sequel can match the original one, and neither can the Ghostbusters 2 movie and game. Neither of the two Ghostbusters 2 games for the NES are anything like the first one, but I must say that Hal did a much better job on their Ghostbusters 2 game than Activision did. In the beginning of the game you choose two ghostbusters, one who shoots the ghosts and one who holds the ghosttrap, however you only control the dude who carries the laser cannon. When you want the guy carryint the trap to snatch the ghost, you press the B button. You can choose between the 4 ghostbusters Egon, Ray, Peter, Winston and then the nerd Louis... you know, the guy who was the "key master" in the first ghostbusters movie. The game has 6 levels, 1. The Courthouse, 2. The abandoned subway tunnel, 3. Dana's Place, 4. Drainage system, 5. The Art Museum and 6. Vigo's place. The first two levels are easy and short, but the next two are incredibly long and hard. Once you're hit by a ghost, or if they throw an object at you, you loose a life. But the game isn't hard if you just keep your eyes open and your fingers on the fire button. The game has great graphics and sound, and I if you're a ghostbusters fan, and had to choose between the 3 games, get Hal's New Ghostbusters 2!! .----------------------------. | Title : Cartoon Workshop | Ever wanted to make your own cartoon? Well | Maker : Konami | with Konami's Tiny Toon Cartoon Workshop | Year : 1992 | you get the chance to do so. It's a great | | idea Konami came up with here, but it | Type : - | somehow doesn't really work on a NES. Too | No. of Players : 1 | many limitations in the program makes it | Cart size : ? Megabit | absolutely borring, sad but true. `----------------------------ï You get a bunch of well drawn backgrounds from the world of Tiny Toons, a bunch of Tiny Toon characters, a list of pre-written sentenses and ofcourse some sound to screw it all up. The only things you are allow to do is selecting a background and then adding some of the many animated characters to it, along with some text and sound. But why can't I type in my own words? I mean, how hard can it be? a screen with the alphabet, like when you have to type in your name in Zelda or some other game. It also takes a long time just to make a small cartoon, and here comes the worst thing about this cartridge.... you cannot save your work!! Hmmm, I dont know how you feel, but I hate spending hours making something I cannot save. You can ofcourse tape the damn cartoon, but you cannot edit it once you've turned off your NES. I wanted this cartridge for a long time because it was something unique on the NES, only a few other cartridges similar to this one exist, like THQ's Videomation. But boy was i dissapointed when I got it, and I wouldn't tell someone to go and buy this if they're looking for something fun. The final words has to be... ABSOLUTELY CRAPPY! ............................................................................ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- .....BUY/SELL/TRADE SECTION................................................. It would be cool to hear some of those weird NES dreams people have, I sure have had a few, heh. So please write it down before you forget it and send it in :) Below is from a newsgroup over a year ago where someone posted a NES dream... ............................................................................ Newsgroups: rec.games.vidoe.classic,rec.games.video.nintendo Subject: NES cart dream (Cruel). From: pdsmith@execpc.com (Paul D. Smith) Date: Sat, 22 Mar 1997 00:36:57 GMT Last nite I had a very cruel NES cart dream. It goes as follows: I get a call from sonone who says he has "a few of those old Nintendo tapes". I go over there to check it out, and the guy has a shelf full of about 5000 (Yes, 5000) NES games, that his parents are looking to get rid of (It seams he now owned PSX). I nearly wet myself as I approch the shelf- 80% of the games have the origional box and docs- This guy had all of the accessories boxed.. I asked "How Much" and here is the reply I got "For you? Oh man, nobody wants these things- or these 8-tracks! (At this point, he pulls out a small box full of ER, NR, and Prototype 2600 games) Just take 'em out of here so I can get more room for my PSX!" I gleefully start taking the NES games off of the shelf (We're talking about every offical, unoffical, and prototype NES game knon to man, in multiples- Perfect condition). Then, I wake up, to the unforgiving buz of my alarm clock, yanked from my cart fantasy, and thrust apon another boring day of High School. I could almost cry.. :-( -Paul D. Smith. ............................................................................ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- .....NEXT ISSUE............................................................. Next time we'll hopefully have an interview ready with Vance Kozik, who programmed Color Dreams games such as Menace Beach and Spiritual Warfare. More game reviews.... If you want to write a review or anything else you want to say, then feel free to send it to us at mnielsen@get2net.dk Also, please let us know if this newsletter idea suck or not, we *need* to know ;) That's it for now... - Martin
